The workshops will be followed by a concert by the Kremerata Baltica ensemble to official launch the Muscat Chamber Music Series later this week. –TIMES OF OMAN

Muscat: Musicians from the Latvian classical ensemble Kremerata Baltica held workshops with students at three local schools and the Oud Hobbyists Association, thanks to a music education initiative by the Muscat Chamber Music Series.

Peteris Sokolovskis, a Russian-born Latvian cellist, Lithuanian violinist Agata Daraskaite, and Ukrainian vibraphonist Andrei Pushkarov visited Wattaya School, ABA, the French School of Muscat, and the Oud Hobbyists Association. They played samples of their music, spoke about their instruments and the history of the music they play, and let the students test out the cello, violin and vibraphone.

"I'm so happy that they are so interested. We were surprised. The children were sitting and listening to the music and they enjoyed it. It's not only about fun; I think they really learned something today and that is the main point," Pushkarov told Times of Oman.

These music education workshops are the first of many that the Muscat Chamber Music Series, a non-profit organisation dedicated to bringing free music education and concerts to Omani society, has planned. Ahmed Abouzahra, general manager of Arabesque International, the company behind the Muscat Chamber Music Series, said children benefit greatly from having the opportunity to interact with professional musicians.
