Ben Carson said Tuesday that he has no problem with people flying the Confederate flag -- as long as they do it on private property.

"As a general principle, people can do whatever they want on their private property -- that's one of the basic tenets of freedom in America," Carson said in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. "I am not opposed to anybody doing whatever they want to do on their private property."

I concur with Dr. Carson. What people do on their private property is their business. I don't care, nor do I need to care. Dr. Carson just had a lucid moment, I would say....

This is simply no longer the case.

If the PC Police decide they are "offended" (whatever that means) by anything you do or say or wear or display, "live and let live" does not apply to them. They will do whatever they can to punish you, or at least try to harass and/or intimidate you.

Would you or I do that? Most likely not. But these are special people, people who have appointed themselves as guardians of the society and not subject to turning the other cheek.

They'll pretend it's all about "the law", although they're not quite so concerned about the law when it comes to things like illegal immigration, sanctuary cities or questionable tactics of their politicians.

Yes, since Carson believes in free speech, he concurs that people have the right to fly the Confederate flag on private property. Anyone who thinks otherwise must have flunked basic civics in school. The First Amendment is designed to protect speech we find abhorrent, not just speech that we like, as long as it does not advocate harming others.

No right is an absolute. You have to temper them with common sense. You can't publish kiddie porn and you can't yell 'Fire" in a crowded theater.

The Germans got this one right. After WWII, they banned ANYONE from flying a Swastika or any other Nazi symbol.

We need to do the same for the symbols of the Confederacy.
