“Capitalism is inherently evil because it’s based on greed "

'I did the right thing': Richer Sounds boss has no regrets

In a world of precarious work and heavy retail job losses, good deeds are as rare as hen’s teeth. The act was made all the more impressive by Richer’s decision to give a third of the £9.2m windfall he received for his stake back to more than 500 staff, handing them £1,000 for every year’s service.

“Capitalism is inherently evil because it’s based on greed so you have to rely on people to do the right thing,” he says. “I’m doing the right thing because I sleep better at night, and my business is better off because of it, but a lot of people don’t and that is why the state needs to be firmer.”

He made the big reveal on Tuesday morning at the retailer’s annual store manager conference. Crammed into a small Salvation Army hall in central London, some employees were suspicious but later confessed they had anticipated some extra annual leave. With an average payout of £8,000, the announcement was initially met with hushed silence but within a short space of time Richer would receive a standing ovation from cheering staff.

Julian Richer is the acceptable face of capitalism. His approach to business is the mirror opposite of the corporate goons who dominate most of the worlds commerce.

Richer’s business ideas have, he says, been reinforced by his decision to embrace Christianity in later life, but an early influence was a “socialist” housemaster at his boarding school, Clifton College in Bristol. “I was baptised when I was 47 and I’m very proud of that,” he says. “I call my faith practical Christianity. I just want to try and make the world a better place.”

Who would have thought that doing the right thing would work ? Christianity and socialism go hand in hand.

Here.....he explains "Greed" and socialism and how they go hand in hand....

So Mr Richer is a capitalist and a socialist. He has no problem combining the two.He is a Christian as well. He seems by any measure to be an exemplary character.

A capitalist can give his money away to help the poor, or run his business any way he choses....the socialist uses the government to force the capitalist to give his money to the socialist, who then uses it to acquire more money and power over the people of a country.....we see this over and over again, as a country becomes more socialist, it becomes less free, and the people end up starving.....you ignore Venezuela and Cuba......because they show exactly where socialism leads.....and don't bring in the Nordic countries...they are capistalist countries that have big social welfare programs...they aren't socialist countries.

My faith is not the subject of the thread. Do you consider Mr Richer to be a Christian ?

Sure it is. The implication is that you can only be Christian if you're socialist, etc, etc, etc. You don't know the very first thing about Christianity, Tommy, and that much is perfectly clear.
So do you consider Mr Richer to be a Christian ?

I don't know Tommy. I can't interview him personally.

I'm not judgmental like you.

I don't know why that's funny. You're very judgmental, Tommy. Even calling people "white trash" and "underclass".

Keep all that nonsense snottiness right over there.
Your lack of self awareness is staggering.

Why, because I am passing judgment on you? Right, I am much more well informed on you. Look how many words you've slathered all over this forum, Tommy. Really, really judgmental words, like "white trash" and "underclass". To prove that you are, in fact, judgmental, you want me to sit in judgment of a so-called fellow Christian I do not know and have never met based on, I don't know, some of his political views.

you, of course, think this is right because you are judgmental.

He is a capitalist...who doesn't understand capitalism.

He made money through his own hard work and inventiveness....now, through those free exchanges with his customers....he didn't use force to make them use his services and products....he can use his own money to help others....and by doing it himself, he can actually make sure that his money goes to the people he wants to help, and not to the socialist government officials who will use his money for their own power and wealth...

The socialists....want to go in, take his money, tell him how to run his business, and use the money he made for their own end, never having made a thing on their own, but using the force of government to take what he has....

I missed that part of the Bible where it says you should work for all the people stuffed in the clown car. Dividing self interest from labor is kind of silly. Thou shalt not make a sandwich.

Socialism is the king of Greed.....you have government officials who get money and power over others, not through anything they make or create or serve on their own...but through the ability to leverage government force against those people who do serve others, who make and create things for others......

Socialism is a way to money and power that uses government force to get those things.....rather than serving others and creating goods and services that make life better for other people......

Agreed. But I'll add the trait more sinister than Greed is Envy, which is the motivator that drives evil people to band together to take by force from others.

Norway is a small country with a population less than some major American cities. Moreover, it holds one of the biggest oil reserves in Europe which help fill government funds.
Totally incorrect comparison.

You're quite right, totally incorrect comparison. The USA is arguably the richest, most powerful nation on Earth and totally independant of foreign oil supplies, yet it can't or won't provide financial security for it's elderly population, can't or won't provide paid parental leave for it's citizens, can't or won't provide free health care or education, has more than double the infant mortality rate and three times the poverty rate. Yet spends more on it's military than China, Saudi Arabia, India, France, Russia, the UK and Germany combined. But, still has a lower GDP than Norway. So Capitalism is not inherantly evil, yeah, right.
