Nevada Assembly Republicans argued in favor of a bill Tuesday that would expand the rights of people who kill someone in self-defense, although critics said it would breed a culture of “shoot first, ask questions later.”

Republican Assemblywoman Shelly Shelton presented AB 171, which would extend protections to people defending their vehicles or homes from an invader and provide civil immunity for people who commit a justifiable homicide.

Pass it. Nobody should fear retribution by the government or via civil lawsuit because they killed someone in defense of their life or that of another.

“If you do engage in self-defense, that will come out in court,” said Vanessa Spinazola, lobbyist for the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada.

Wrong. Nobody should have to deal with the stress of prosecution or a lawsuit or the financial set back of having to defend one's self because you killed an aggressor while saving your own life. This legislation is sensible and strengthens our Second Amendment rights at the state level.

Interesting dilemma. Civil claims have a lower threshhold. Who decides 'justifiable homicide', the DA or a review board or the local NRA executive board? Let's work this out more clearly.

It's very clear to sober people. The DA's office seeks charges if they see potential guilt. The bill would stop wrongful death civil suits if there's no cause of action.

A finding of not guilty as a defense to civil claim may not make it through the courts. Just saying. I like the idea, but its'd doubtful.
