Looks like the old school Liberals are trying to reign in the beast they partially created at Berkeley.

Berkeley launches website explaining free speech, denouncing 'de facto censorship' - Hot Air

“Can UC Berkeley cancel a student-sponsored event if the administration or the campus community disagrees with the speaker’s views?” This seems like the kind of thing far left activists on campus might want to know. The good news is that Berkeley’s answer is unequivocal: “No, this would violate established law and the rights of student groups to invite whoever they wish to the Berkeley campus. Only student groups who invite speakers have the authority to disinvite them.”

No, freedom of speech does not give someone the right to drown out the words and speech of others; freedom of speech would mean little if the audience was able to silence anyone with whom they disagreed. Once a society starts down the path of condoning such de facto censorship, it creates the culture and conditions in which anyone’s rights of speech can be compromised.

Defending the right of free speech for those whose ideas we find offensive is not easy. It often conflicts with the values we hold as a community — tolerance, inclusion, reason and diversity. Some constitutionally protected speech attacks the very identity of particular groups of individuals in ways that are deeply hurtful. However, the right response is not the heckler’s veto, or what some call platform denial. Call toxic speech out for what it is, don’t shout it down, for in shouting it down, you collude in the narrative that universities are not open to all speech. Respond to hate speech with more speech.

Hopefully this will get through to the little cry-bullies who are the ones using violence or the threat of violence to silence people they don't like.

Holy shit, good for them. Right in the face of the Regressives. Nice.

To be fair they do have a link for counseling for triggered individuals on the site, but I guess some habits will be harder to break.

Still an encouraging sign finally. The real test will be when Milo and Bannon show up. A lot of people really don't know who Shapiro is.

The pushback continues. Maybe somebody there is paying attention to 2016.

It's more likely the admins playing CYA after donations dried up due to their obvious fascist bent.

Maybe, but remember this is Berkeley so they could actually damage some donations from the anti-fa types by going back to protecting speech.

Curious to see the response from the protest groups.

Janet Napolitano is in charge. Fascism will continue to grow within the UC system.

the proof however is in the steps taken to squash the violence committed by the antifa's on campus. until they actually defend that right of the other students, those are just words on a document. that carries absolutely no weight at all. They must first walk the walk before they fool me.

they will pay no attention until the university actually walks the walk. In other words, provide actual security and kick antifa students out of school. until that happens, I say so what.

I know its hard to trust these idiots but it's at least a start. As you said below though, lets see the actions follow the words.

The fact that Ben Shapiro was able to speak without much issue is encouraging.

yes, the cops and campus security must step up if there is attempted disruption.

and, any student in a group arrested, gets kicked out. send them home to mommy and daddy.

Right. Lefties are persistent if nothing else---- like a wart. They may be dumb as bat shit and never see anything they think and do as wrong, but they won't be swayed by a little campus rhetoric; if anything, they will denounce the university as fascist propaganda foisted on them by Trump!

The only way to really get through to a Leftie is to pull down their pants, paddle their little bottoms, take away their comic books and send them to bed with no supper.

wish the people who wrote this stuff didn't sensationalize it.

Berkeley didn't LAUNCH A WEBSITE, she simply posted an article on their existing one explaining this.

Minor quibble to me. The statement alone is an improvement.

oh don't get me wrong, it's HUGE to see berkley more or less shut down their primary audience of hate. i LOVE that they have said it.

but putting an article on say Foxnews.com isn't the same as setting up foxnews.com just to say 1 thing. it just sounds SENSATIONAL so they go with it. :)
