Crimea was leased to Russia by the old Ukrainian government. I think it was something like 70 years, similar to Hong Kong. But when the country of Ukraine imploded, Russia just said they are keeping it. They won’t ever give it up without a nuclear fight. It’s their primary Naval port and had been since the 1700’s.
