Doctor told to get out because of son with Down syndrome | Herald Sun

A MIGRANT doctor and his family are being forced to leave Australia, and the Victorian town that desperately needs him, because his son has Down syndrome.

Dr Bernhard Moeller answered a call from the Federal Government and the Horsham community two years ago, and moved from Germany to become the town's only permanent specialist physician.

But the Department of Immigration and Citizenship this week rejected an application from Dr Moeller and his family for permanent residency because his 13-year-old son, Lukas, has Down syndrome and does not fit the bureaucracy's health criteria.

Touches a special place in the heart don't it

    Yes they are.

At least the citizens are protesting this decision, and want his family to stay.

this is one side effect of a universal healthcare run by gvt.... that is negative, and if we were EVER to go to a one payer, universal plan, we need to have laws in place to prevent this kind of discrimination against those with disabilities.

Actually, every country, including this one, has restrictions on bringing in people who will not be self-supporting.

I think perhaps the focus on Australia is a bit self-serving as it has nothing to do with "socialized medicine" as much as it does controlling one's borders... you know, something the right likes so much.

Can't have a nanny state, after all. :eusa_shhh:

If I'm not mistaken, I think you still can also be deported from the U.S. for becoming a public charge.

I think they just feel like whining about the durn furriners today.

It's encouraging to see Andrew advocating to allow retarded hispanics American citizenship.
