Asking for a raise

If that's true of them, it's a bit creepy.

Making less than $10 per hour, what exactly is your job title?

Please give us more information on what exactly your position and field is.

Guest Services or Front Desk. Some people may even call it a receptionist. I'm the dude at the front desk whenever you check in at the hotel.
You are not being paid enough.
Ok...I'm gonna step in yer shoes for a minute. Check out what needs improving, then do it. BUT KEEP TRACK OF WHAT YOU DO AND WHEN, in a notebook. That nobody knows about. Think of ideas that will make them more money...like...do they keep a log of items furnished in the rooms? Motel maids and staff tend to pocket that shit. Tiny bottles of shampoo, soaps, conditioners, etc.
Do they have a nice logo?
Do they have you send an email or a letter thanking guests for their stay, and tell of upcoming events they may want to book for in advance?
Are you willing to be fill-in for another property they own if someone comes down sick?
Are you willing to work overtime if someone is ill?
Shit like that.

That sounds like a lot of work in order to give my boss extra toilet paper. I like what you are saying but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't waste your time doing that at this hotel. It's almost like the owner's goal is to lose as much money as possible so that he can get a tax deduction. However, if that is his goal then paying me more would maximizes his losses.
I liked my job. I enjoyed doing what I did. I got rewarded for that when I didn't ask for a reward. To this day, my pamphlets are STILL being used at those motels. All of them that they own. MY logo is used. MY words. MY recommendations and suggestions to guests for an excellent vacay while staying with us. Was it a lot of work? What else am I to do once guests are settled in? Twiddle my thumbs? I liked doing stuff to keep busy. And I like they kept what I did.
Maybe this is not the job for you. You've already given up, want to demand, pat yourself on the back, give a time limit, and in general consider your job "too much work".

I'm done here. Good luck.

Is this the field you want to stay in? What you really want?

(I'm asking you this straightforwardly, because it's important to you.)

Not forever but I can see myself staying in this field until my kids are grown. I could see myself still doing this for another 10 years. It is very low stress and pleasurable. I do want to start making money again once my kids are grown. A less volatile, low pressure life is a desirable option during this era of my life. This is my favorite job out of all of the jobs that I have ever had.

I wouldn't be disappointed if something came along and I had to go back into accounting.

Are you the famous Wake from Debate Politics that I never met? CaptainCourtesy is still obsessed with you. I joined about 6 months after you was banned. I was accused of being you on multiple occasions. If I am you then this is a very unique warp zone in the universe that we are experiencing at the moment. I can't be you because I am talking to you. This is so bizarre.
He is, indeed. He started off kinda burned here..mostly due to me I'm sad to admit. But he is now a very valued member of USMB. It is DPs loss.

Agreed. I hope you take comfort in knowing that I had a lot of fun with it. CaptainCourtesy was the most obsessive power junky that I have ever encountered on the web. He'd probably love to ban you from this website if he could. He was really good at his job. It was super creepy. You will get no argument from me on that.

Too much work? Not hardly.

I thought you said you have done this before. There is almost nothing to do. Was your owner American or Indian? Did he own one hotel or multiple hotels? How often did you see the owner? I see mine about every other month. He spends all of his time at the good hotel.

Are you active on Debate Politics?
Not much. I never knew what was correct or incorrect. Very confusing rules. I like it there, yes, but...I kinda lay low and just read now and then.

And..a small heads up.....talking about other boards here at USMB is a no no. Competition.

Yes, I have done it before.
But like I said...I am done with the convo about this particular topic. And I still wish you luck.

No. Not worth the time, effort, or sacrifice of character and dignity.

I've been primarily active on a forum revolving around the messageboard-based game of Mafia. Just recently came back here for a change of pace. I do use legit and encouraged alts at that other site while playing Mafia tho. :p

EDIT: Oops. Misread. Sorry. :D

No, I think I did, lol. Whatever. He got two answers from one question.

That's fine. I'll just assume that he was an American and you seen him/her daily. You do realize that America has an odd tradition of valuing hard work. I don't mean that sarcastically. Rewarding the hard work of a good employee is contrary to human nature. This is a totally an American idea and is rarely practiced elsewhere in the world. Even younger generations of business owners have been influenced by Ayn Rand's book, "Atlas Shrugged".

In 2002 I got a job making $6.50 an hour. In 6 years I worked my way up to $10.50 an hour plus a $350 bonus every month. I was working for an American Jewish man that comes to work every single day. He had a stroke a couple of years ago and is in very poor health. He still comes to work every single day and rides around the store in his scooter/wheel chair thingee. There are people who value hard work. I will not disagree with you on that. I will disagree if you claim that every business owner wants to improve his business. Sometimes business owners have invisible motives that make absolutely no sense to the outsider. Some business owners farm out their human resource issues to a professional. That professional is trained to protect the business owner from making emotional decisions in regards to his/her employees. They operate under a uniform formula and make sure that nobody succeeds not even the human resource officer. The formula is calculated to extract the most financial benefit by exploiting human nature to the fullest.

The world is more diverse than you paint it to be. In the history of mankind, the concept of being rewarded for hard work is very rare. I was just fortunate to come of age in 1997. I have seen both sides.

I did the Front Desk as well, for about 6 months to a year at the Holiday Inn C.C., in Miami....(my very first job in Florida, I was actually on vacation when I first took the job...it was unusually cold, I was bored cuz I could not go to the Beach, the cousin of a friend I was visiting with... just said, hey, we need some help at the hotel I work at, would you like a job? I said yes) I loved the front Desk as well and was the best front desk clerk! But as I stayed, I wanted more money with more responsibility and took a promotion to "Night Auditor" and balanced the Pit every night from 11:30 pm to 8:30 AM in the morning....after about 5-6 months of doing the midnight shift, sometimes 7 nights a week because the part time weekend auditor was unreliable and finally got fired without a replacement so I did it, I got burnt out and just quit....Midnight shift jobs are holy hell, even for a very young person, just unnatural to work that shift and sleep during the day imho...3 to 11pm is okay....

I started working the night shift 11pm-7am on Friday and Saturday night while I was going to college. After I graduated they bumped me up to working two shifts 7am-3pm along with the two shifts from 11pm-7am shifts.

Now I have become really good and dealing with everything they have me working 5 shifts from 3pm-11pm all by myself. There is no other front desk person, no management, no maintenance and no housekeeping. I run the show all by myself. Which is very entertaining to me at times but there are occasions when it isn't so fun. At my hotel the 3pm-11pm shift is the worst but it pays the same.

Vas, take your 4 years experience, and find a job at another hotel, you will get paid more for your experience. If you live in an area that has Casinos and Casino Hotels, you could get more money than the average hotel.

You are in a dead end job with dead end owners from what you are telling us....the longer you wait to make the move, the more you will regret it...

make certain you have a new job, before you quit the old one though..... its easier to interview when you already have a job than if you are unemployed and looking for one, also easier to ask for more money from the new employer....before accepting the job offer...

good luck!
