This article really pissed me off. Rocky is absolutely as important as Network or Taxi Driver. Cinematically, it more or less created the plot structure that practically every sports movie since then has followed. Sure, it wasn't dark or "independent", but not everything has to be depressing, y'know?

Just more evidence that hollywood doesnt get it. They look back on themselves and say "wtf did we do?" Rocky wasnt just a sports movie. IT represented an entire metropolitan area for that time period. It portrayed philadelphia exactly how it was. The kind of people that came from there. The life that they had to look forward to. The underdog formula just added to the allure. Then in the end the fact that he didnt win but still won Apollo's respect ends the movie perfectly. Everyone cheering for apollo but Rocky triumphant inside that he overcame the obstacles and demons that plagued his life.

The sequals were corny but the original deserved the oscar.
