The officer who confronted the Maryland school shooter Tuesday was identified as 34-year-old Blaine Gaskill, a veteran sheriff’s deputy with SWAT training.

A six-year St. Mary’s County sheriff’s deputy, Gaskill worked as a school resource officer at Great Mills High School since August.

He’s credited with stopping gunman Austin Wyatt Rollins, who shot a 16-year-old female student he’d had a prior relationship with, authorities said. A 14-year-old male student also was injured.

Gaskill and Rollins, 17, fired a shot at exactly the same time – and it’s unclear whether Rollins committed suicide or died from Gaskill’s bullet.

Rollins later died at a hospital.

Sheriff Tim Cameron said there was “no question” that the deputy’s quick response helped prevent further deaths or injuries.

“He had to cover significant ground,” Cameron said. “The premise is simple: You go to the sound of gunfire.”

Just being devil’s advocate here. I am pro 2nd amendment and pro good guy with a gun.

If it turns out that the 16 year old shooter shot himself, he may of done that anyway because he had accomplished his mission of shooting his (ex)girlfriend. He may had not been trying to amass a high body count.
Since he is dead we may never know, but we can speculate until the cows come home.

The reason this creep shot himself is because the cop was going to shoot him dead with a gun.

Feb 22, 2018 - In the wake of the mass shooting last week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, we have heard a familiar refrain from those steadfastly opposing any kind of gun reform: To stop armedstudents, put armed guards—or teachers “adept at firearms,” as President Trump proposed—.

The reason this creep shot himself is because the cop was going to shoot him dead with a gun.
AUSTIN — The 24-year-old suspect in a three-week campaign of deadly bombings around Austin killed himself early Wednesday by detonating an explosive device in his vehicle as SWAT officers approached him leaving a hotel parking lot, police said

The mass murderer who gunned down 58 victims during a Las Vegas music festival in October died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the mouth, according to a coroner. Stephen Paddock's death was ruled a suicide,

You don't know that, just look at the Austin bomber, or the Las Vegas shooter, who killed themselves because police were going to take him alive.

If he shot himself it's because his spree came to a quick end and he knew he could no longer do damage and didn't want to be taken alive.

Stick with armed guards. They would be known and easily identified should the police or SWAT team show up looking for a gunman. A teacher holding a gun could easily be confused for an armed attacker.

Speculation....but probably right.

Speculation.....could very well be correct...but speculation never the less.

Maryland School Shooting Victim to be Taken Off Life Support
March 23, 2018 - Speaking in a hushed hospital lobby, the parents of the 16-year-old girl wounded in the school shooting at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland said Thursday evening they would take her off life support.
Jaelynn Willey was left brain-dead after a 17-year-old boy shot her in the head Tuesday morning, said her mother, Melissa Willey. “As of now Jaelynn is still on life support but she will not make it,” Willey said. “She is brain dead and has nothing, no life, left in her.” Willey spoke to reporters at the University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center, where Jaelynn is being treated. She held Jaelynn’s youngest sibling, who babbled as she shared the news, and her husband, Daniel, stood by her side. Other family stood behind Willey as she spoke and a group of friends stood off to one side. Jaelynn Willey was rushed to the hospital in Cheverly after the Tuesday morning shooting at the St. Mary’s County high school.

Authorities have said that 17-year-old Austin Wyatt Rollins, also a student at Great Mills, used a handgun to shoot Willey. A 14-year-old boy, Desmond Barnes, also was shot in the leg. Rollins was confronted by the school resource officer, County Sheriff’s Deputy Blaine Gaskill, who fired at him as Rollins also fired. Rollins later died at a hospital. Barnes was released from a hospital Wednesday after being treated. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that Rollins took the gun from his father, who had acquired it legally. The sheriff’s office also said that the shooting was not a random act. There’s evidence that Rollins and Willey had “a prior relationship which recently ended,” according to the sheriff’s office. The shooting added fresh fuel to a renewed national debate about how to keep students safe from gunmen in schools. Last month, 17 students and teachers were slain at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., by a gunman wielding a semiautomatic assault rifle.

Melissa and Daniel Willey said on Thursday, March 22, 2018, that they planned to take their daughter, Jaelynn, off life support after she was wounded in a shooting at Great Mills High School in St Mary's County, Md.

Politicians have proposed new gun restrictions and measures to fortify schools. Students from around the nation are poised to rally Saturday in Washington and elsewhere in what they’re calling the March for Our Lives. Amid the debate, the scene in the hospital lobby was poignantly personal. Willey said the family’s lives had been altered forever. “My daughter was hurt by a boy who shot her in the head and took everything from our lives,” Willey said. Willey, who said her daughter was the second of nine children, spoke with little obvious emotion and apologized that her baby was being loud. She said she thought it was important to share the news of the family’s decision personally. “I felt like as her mom I needed to make that statement to everybody,” she said. Supporters of Jaelynn Willey and her family set up an online page for well-wishers to provide donations. It had raised $66,000 by Thursday evening.

The family said Jaelynn was a “dedicated student” and a member of the school’s swim team. “Jaelynn is an amazing young lady, whose peaceful presence and love of her fellow students and family is known throughout her Maryland-based school,” the family said in a statement. Kimberly Dennis, the mother of Desmond Barnes, issued a statement earlier Thursday saying the family was grateful he was doing well. She thanked those who treated Desmond and prayed for him. “We remain deeply saddened and shocked by this shooting incident and continue to pray for the other victim and her family during this difficult time,” Dennis wrote. “We are also praying for the entire Great Mills High School family and young people around this country. “As a community and nation, we must continue to work and fight for a world that is safe for our children.”
