I live in Buffalo and this once proud city hasn't elected a Republican Mayor (Sorry Peach, but I know my city's history) since 1965. And even then, Democrats were far more Conservative than they are today. the last Democrat I actually liked was mayor James D. Griffin. Very pro-business, pro-life, and Conservative to the core, he got the city solvent after the disasterous Makowski administration, started the massive rebuilding of the city streets, built Griffin Field downtown. He was a very likeable Mayor who wasn't afraid to hash it out with his political enemies. Since then, we had one mayor who was nothing but milquetoast, and this clown we have now.

CA is only going the way of Detroit when the tech sector looks like the auto industry of 1975. And this IS possible but less likely. CA is importing (not creating) the human capital to fire up the tech industry. A disruption in incentives could end that brain flow, higher taxes, immigration changes, &c.

CA is not recognizing it's unfunded future union costs, which are nightmarish. They tout a balanced budget on a cash basis but are truly fucked on an accrual basis.

Well, lets understand a few things here.

In order for government to function, it needs funding, or what you would call tax.
Detroit's government is constantly failing from the lack of income, which is caused by the declining population, increasing unemployment, etc. It's not a Democrat thing on why Detroit is such a shithole, it's more of a non-partisan economic and government thing.
The lack of funding is so bad that police departments are closed to the public for 16 hours a day.

Some can argue that bailouts would help jump start Detroit, but I disagree. Unless Detroit can get a big source of income that is other than the federal government, it's doomed.


Now about the whole "Democrats are bad" thing. Detroit is a prime example of what happens when there is no funding. Governments, Cities, States, and Agencies need tax in order to operate. Don't Republicans and Conservatives want to CUT TAXES AND ALL OF THE ABOVE? They do. And that can have you ending up like Detroit.

Now California, they have tackled the budget head on. California can't afford to cut on spending, it's just simple as that. Including the school systems and other problems, you can say that they need to increase spending. In order to spend, you need an income. As a result, they imposed higher taxes, and in short, there is no other way around the problem.
