Got my first speeding ticket in decades today. Will one ticket cause premiums to go up so much that hiring a lawyer plus paying double the fine would be more beneficial than just absorbing the premium increase?

Depends on your carrier and speed. Some allow one ticket. If not you can always apply for a deferral to the court. You will plead guilty but they will delay placing it on your record for a fee. If you do not get another ticket in a specific amount of time it will simply disappear.

In CA you can do traffic school. Pay a fee, do a SAT in a desk or even online nowdays? Violation not charged to your record. But, it has to be minor and you can only do it once a year or so?

best thing to do is not speed.....

It is always a good idea to get a lawyer and keep a ticket off your record, if that option is available.
