Well, the ramifications depend on whether one is the leave-er, or the leave-ee.
1. In Matthew 27:25, Pontius Pilate rid himself of a sticky problem, and 'washed his hands' of the matter of Jesus. And, he simply wandered off to deal with other matters.
In a romantic relationship, when one breaks it off, that one is free to simply move on with one's ...affairs....

2. But the effect on the one who has been jilted....they have to deal with all sorts of questions. When it's the girl who has been dumped....it's a pint of Häagen-Dazs, a new handbag, and move on.

3. In politics today we are witnessing an entirely different break-up. It may be over between the Democrat Party and the group they have long treated like a mistress: black Americans.
4. To pretend to make up for slavery, lynchings and discrimination, the Democrats played kissy-kissy with black folks, promising all sorts of things that they never intended to fulfill....in fact, the only thing Democrats/Liberals have done for blacks is ban one particular word.
The group with the lowest median income, after half a century of promises, still has the lowest median income of any group.
