Americans strongly agree with both major presidential candidates about the importance of bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States and are willing to pay more for consumer goods to make it happen. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

We're not a manufacturing economy anymore because the Clintons sent our manufacturing jobs to Mexico and China. Trump has a plan to get them back and Hillary has nothing to say about them.

If you bleev the Bring Our Jobs Back fools, you'd think a textile worker should be paid 30 dollars an hour.

It's a low tech industry and should be automated or outsourced.

In fact, a lot of jobs that have vanished didn't go overseas. They were automated and are NEVER coming back.

The days of growing up to work in the same factory as your daddy are over. Trump is selling a cocaine-induced fantasy.

We need to be training our kids for the jobs of tomorrow, not the old low-tech jobs of yesterday.

What's wrong with both?

Why don't we manufacture the machines that manufacture then? There's HEAPS of stuff we could be doing.

"The future has arrived. It’s just not evenly distributed yet.” – William Gibson

A century ago, we employed 50 percent of our population in agriculture to feed our nation.

Now, due to the wonders of technology, it only takes about 3 percent of our population to feed us, and they are producing more food than in all of human history.

What would you make of someone decrying the loss of agriculture jobs who felt we needed to employ 50 percent of the country on farms?

You'd say there were seriously misguided, yes?

It's the same thing with these demagogues and manufacturing.

Let's travel back in time 60 years...

FARMER: What will my toddler son do when he grows up if he isn't going to be a farmer, dad blast it?

PSYCHIC: (*peers into crystal ball*) Your son is going to be in charge of the maintenance for satellite uplink/downlink terminals at Verizon.

FARMER: What's a satellite, and WHAT THE HELL IS A VERIZON!?!

PSYCHIC: I don't know, but if I were you, I'd be whipping him with a switch if he doesn't get straight A's in mathematics and science.

FARMER: Will he be handsome? Will he be rich?

PSYCHIC: Que sera, sera. Whatever will be, will be. The future's not ours to see...

We would be seriously cheating our children and future generations if we tried to bring back low tech jobs like textiles. The dumbing down of America has gone far enough, people.

We need to be looking forward, and training forward.

There's a reason high-tech jobs are barely unionized. The skills are so far and few between that anyone with the skills has wage negotiating power.

Automation has made most of those manufacturing jobs that left America obsolete. It may be possible to get some of those companies to come back but as they no longer have to employ as many people it's a lie to say there would be thousands and thousands of jobs brought back, they just do not exist anymore. Experts in these sorts of things expect even service industry jobs to gradually fall to automation. Not sure how we can have an economy when robotics are getting so good at replacing humans.

Trump has no damn plan, governors like Nikki Halley is the one who are brining manufacturing jobs back .

Some jobs are being outsourced because of protectionism. This bullshit that Americans would pay more to bring jobs home is utter nonsense.

They didn't want to pay more for candy.

Our government enacted protectionism for sugar companies, keeping sugar prices artificially high in the US, and this resulted in our candy companies leaving America. That was a lot of lost jobs.

Trump is another idiot protectionist who will fuck things up even more.

You mean Trump- the business man who had his product manufactured overseas- because he didn't think consumers would pay more for his product if it was made in the United States?

How much more would you personally be willing to pay for say a TV manufactured in the United States- rather than China?

$100? $200? $400?
