Some recent research shows that lower life expectancy or longevity in America when compared to other industrialized nations is not a result of the health care system. This puts some perspective regarding some of the health care rankings which tend to attribute longevity to a country's health care system.

...a prominent researcher, Samuel H. Preston, has taken a closer look at the growing body of international data, and he finds no evidence that America’s health care system is to blame for the longevity gap between it and other industrialized countries. In fact, he concludes, the American system in many ways provides superior treatment even when uninsured Americans are included in the analysis.

“The U.S. actually does a pretty good job of identifying and treating the major diseases,” says Dr. Preston, a demographer at the University of Pennsylvania who is among the leading experts on mortality rates from disease. “The international comparisons don’t show we’re in dire straits.”

Well duh. Don't try convincing the libs, though. That individuals are actually greatly respsonible for their outcomes is a true paradox to them.

Two weeks and no response. Just shows they will ignore this information.

Very nice of you do decide what we liberals believe, or do not believe. Typical for someone that fails to do any research.

So that also explains the fact that we also have a third world infant mortality rate? That our death among our young children from childhood respitory diseases is more than 40 times that of Canada's.

Japan has the highest longevity, France is next, and then comes little Costa Rica. Would you care to compare what each of these nations spend per citizen on health care to what we spend? How about health care as a per centage of their GDP?

Perhaps their dedication to pro-active care may be a significant factor, also.

well why did you not answer the question i asked earlier Rocks?....once again playing Fred Astair.....Question....does Americas lifestyle of over eating and being to sedentary have anything to do with the health and longevity of the people of this country?.....

Actually, I think you need to do more research behind what you are saying here and not automatically attribute certain health statistics to problems with the US health care system. Here is some research for you about infant mortality: Health Status, Health Care and Inequality: Canada vs. the U.S.

I have taken these quotes from this site, which contains some of the research by NBER: What do high infant mortality rates say about the US health care system? « Free Market Mojo

This research said that there are “a multitude of behaviors unrelated to the health care system such as substance abuse, smoking and obesity” and that these behaviors are connected “to the low birth weight and preterm births that underlie the infant death syndrome.” They also said that because of their research that “the efficacy of health care systems cannot be usefully evaluated by comparisons of infant mortality and life expectancy”

Another quote:

In fact, our calculations indicate that if in Canada the distribution of births by birth weight was the same as in the U.S. their infant mortality rate would rise to 7.06 from the observed level of 5.5. Similarly if births in the U.S. had the same distribution by birth-weight as Canadian births, the U.S. infant mortality rate would have been 5.401 instead of 6.85.
So, we have higher teen pregnancies and we have a greater percentage of people who have unhealthy lifestyles. This goes back to the other research from my original post in this thread.

By the way, you still have not answered whether Harry was incorrect or not in what he asserted about what liberals believe on this subject. Perhaps you could provide a real answer?

No, I won't be holding my breath. I might let out a sigh of exasperation though.

Facts are that when Canada switched to a single payer system, that there health statistics were virtually identical with ours. Today, they live 3 years longer, and their infant and childhood mortality is far less than ours. It is you dinosaurs that are dancing around the facts. Time to face reality.

The Vast Majority Of Americans are happy with their health insurance, Old Rocks.

That question assumes those traits are uniquely American.

If you want to know why not many liberals respond to this is because it is complete garbage.. Let me guess, you stuck your head out your window in the middle of winter, discovered it is cold so that must mean global warming is a hoax?? Typical neotard ideas and theories.. Base everything on anything that remotely goes in their direction.. Even though you don't have a single fact to base it on..

We are DEAD last when it comes to preventable deaths compared to other industrialized nations.. DEAD LAST!!

Preventable Deaths for selected countries, 1997-1998 and 2002-2003, issued 2008

The U.S. has the best health care system in the world

Another website with some interesting facts and explinations..

Oh.. And if it is cold where you live it might be because it is winter... Not because global warming is a hoax.. Just letting you know... I know these simple concepts are hard for rebuttlicans.. But do try.. Liberals like to respond to intelligent debates.. Not trash taking up space on a forum..

No, you’re just looking at statistics and attributing them to what you think caused the change in those statistics. You need to consider all or at least more of the facts behind the statistics before you can begin to face reality.

No, it does not assume that. America having a higher percentage of its population with unhealthy lifestyles makes it unique and something to consider when looking at health statistics. You did not look at the research on American longevity and its relationship (or lack thereof) to American health care presented in this thread, did you?

[sarcasm on] Yes, it is only the statistics that matter [sarcasm off]. I’m not questioning the statistics. I do question the analysis of the statistics completed by someone called Steve Kangas (a self-proclaimed liberal) on his personal website (huppi.com) discussing “Liberal FAQ’s”. Do you really expect everyone to believe this website’s analysis of the statistics? Does Steve Kangas have more credibility than Dr. Preston? I can tell you did not really read the research posted in this thread about American longevity and its lack of correlation to the American health care system. You are not even addressing it.

I’m going to stick with one of the leading experts on mortality rates (Dr. Preston), you can go ahead and stick with someone’s personal website and its author’s uncredentialed analysis of health statistics. That is your choice; just don't expect people to believe you.

Here, I will quote from the article summarizing Dr. Preston’s research again, just in case you missed it, and since you seem to be calling his research “garbage”:

...a prominent researcher, Samuel H. Preston, has taken a closer look at the growing body of international data, and he finds no evidence that America’s health care system is to blame for the longevity gap between it and other industrialized countries. By the way, creating an off topic, distracting argument about global warming only makes you look foolish. Address the topic please and don’t pretend to know my position on global warming.

thanks for proving the point moron. If you had to take a wild guess who would you suppose is in the best position to do the actual preventing? I'll give you a hint. It is NOT your doctor.

The results the research in the OP derived are a lot different from what other studies have shown. While he claims lifestyle factors account for most of the difference, other studies have shown lifestyle only accounts for about three percent of the difference.
