It's not "sweet Canadian crude". It's delivering oil extracted from the tar sands in Northern Alberta in a process that can best be described as "toxic strip mining". It's been described as the "dirtiest oil on earth" and has to be extracted from the sand best described as "steam cleaning", which increases the level of pollution and CO2 involved in its extraction.

Before the tar sands were developed, the price of crude had to be sufficient high enough to justify the additional investment needed to cover the costs of cleaning the oil, once it was mined. Canadians had always hoped that the price would never get high enough. Sadly, it did.
