They have been trending down for several weeks now. As I have said hundreds of time, it is not what they do over one week's time, but over the space of months and quarters. The present trend is down, but not down enough for us to claim that the economy is getting better. I know it is hard for a lot of old timers on this board to understand, but in an economy that is seventy percent dependent upon spending for jobs to be maintained, increases in unemployment insurance claims over a normal ebb and flow of 350,000 is an indication of a collapsing economy.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 452,468 in the week ending Feb. 20.

Considering the fact that manufacturing only makes up about ten percent of the economy, that seventy percent number should be tweeked up.
