There were, in those days, quite a lot of efforts to create hybrid jet/propeller aircraft, with results ranging from JATO configurations where jet or rocket engines were simply used to help an aircraft achieve takeoff speed more quickly, to turboprop configurations which were largely successful at driving a propeller from the turbine of what was otherwise a turbojet engine.

There were a number of efforts that were wildly unsuccessful. Among the more notorious was the XF-84H Thunderstreak, nicknamed the “Thunderscreech” for the horrendous noise that it made.
