2 Dems to vote for Trump's court nominee; Schumer urges 'no'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two Democrats facing tough re-elections in GOP states said Thursday they will vote for President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, even as the Senate Democratic leader strongly warned Republicans against changing Senate rules to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch.

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York had tough words for his Republican counterpart, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, in an interview with The Associated Press.

"He's bound and determined to change the rules and trample on Senate tradition to get a nominee chosen by the hard-right Heritage Society, without any consultation with Democrats. That is a true statement," Schumer said of McConnell. "Let the public judge whether that is a good thing."

Schumer spoke shortly after Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota became the first Democrats to announce their support for Gorsuch, a Denver-based appellate judge. They join all 52 Senate Republicans, who argue Gorsuch is impeccably qualified to join the high court and accuse Democrats, and Schumer in particular, of playing politics by opposing him.

The Senate confirmation vote is expected late next week. Unless 60 senators support Gorsuch — which would require six more Democrats to join Heitkamp and Manchin — Republicans would have to unilaterally change Senate rules to allow Gorsuch to be confirmed with a simple majority vote in the 100-member Senate.

Schumer is a waste.

Schumer is waste.

Gorsuch needs six more votes to reach cloture, and I think he may reach it without M pulling the nuclear option.

The dims have 10 Senate seats up for grabs in '18 from states that went Trump in '16, and five of them also supported Romney in '12.

Some tough choices for the Senators to make. Break with Schumer in favor of political survival, or stick with him and lose your membership in their exclusive club? Gee, wonder which these political parasites will choose?

Great article.

Schumer leans heavily on "Senate tradition" (which indeed does go back to 1806) which is a rhetorical argument.

However Schumer does not even try to justify the tradition, nor does he give any good reason why Gorsuch should not be confirmed.

I could see why (future / subjunctive - for you grammarians with good syntax) Schumer would be complaining if RB Ginsberg had just croaked and Gorsuch was replacing her.

But Gorsuch is replacing Scalia, and so this is a win-win for both the DEM's and the GOP. Even moreso for the DEM's -- they are getting a swing voting moderate new Justice for a former extreme Right Wing strict constructionist who voted against both gay marriage and ACA.

By opposing Gorsuch, Schumer is shooting himself in the foot by inviting McConnell's "nuclear option" which was invented by Harry Reid.

Q.E.D.

Schumer is a waste.
Not normally but this time definitely, yes.

The two are up for reelection next year. They are trying to hang on to their seats. Merrick Garland only goes so far.
I know. I read that part too.

Sad when elected officials have to do what they do to get re-elected rather than what they should do because it is right.

However just following Schumer is not right either.

McCaskill may as well be a Republican. She will not really be a loss.
The DEM's need to do whatever it takes to regain the US House.

It is critical that they regain the US House.

So anybody would be a loss. A big loss.

McCaskill may as well be a Republican. She will not really be a loss.
That's why she will vote for Gorsuch.
She will vote for Gorsuch because her constituents like him.

But she should vote for him because it is the right thing to do.

It is the right thing to do because it maintains a balance on the court.

Even a balance that slightly favors the DEMs since Kennedy, Roberts, and Gorsuch are really swing voters not far Right strict constructionists.

I hope you're right, Mr. Utah.

But have you ever considered that your opinion on this is merely Utah wishful thinking?

Utah is the most far right state in the whole Nation.

Just as Hawaii is the most far left, with Calif and NYS close behind it/her.

Gorsuch is going to be confirmed whether it's through standard procedure or the nuclear option. So Dems risking reelection would be smart to just get on board.
