The 1950s was a great time to be a white Protestant Christian male middle class child, that is for sure.
That because in the 1950s unions were strong, daddy made a decent living, mommy probably stayed home and the MASTERS still needed a strong vibrant America and with a strong middle class.
For many other Americans, (Blacks for example) it wasn't such a great time.

It was certainly better for blacks than it is today. Strong families, low crime rate, safe neighborhoods. Very powerful Churches that took care of the needy. And, they knew exactly who was needy. An almost non existent abortion rate. Black men just didn't run out on their families but took care of their children.
While it certainly was very bad in some circumstances, they couldn't eat at the same lunch counters, had to sit in the back of the bus, they were certainly humiliated on a daily basis, but now we have black people in black neighborhoods who think killing others is the solution to all their problems. Absolutely things are much worse for black people today than in the 50s.
