The landing module of China's Chang'e-6 probe used 3D laser scanning to select the most suitable location when landing on the back side of the Moon, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) reported.

China's Chang'e-6 probe successfully landed at 6:23 a.m. (01:23 a.m. Moscow time) on June 2 at a pre-selected landing zone located in the South Pole-Aitken Basin to collect soil samples from the back side of the moon.

According to CNSA, at a distance of 100 meters to the surface of the Moon, the vehicle hovered, and using 3D laser scanning, selected the most suitable point for landing, and then began a slow vertical descent. Just before landing, the engine was turned off, and the probe in a state of free fall successfully landed.
CNSA notes that the Chang'e-6 mission has made a breakthrough in terms of planning and control technology in the retrograde orbit of the Moon.

The Chang'e-5 Y8 rocket launched on May 3 from the Wenchang Cosmodrome on Hainan Island on schedule at 17.27 local time (12.27 Moscow time). If the mission is successful, the Chang'e-6 spacecraft will deliver soil from the Moon's back side to Earth for the first time in human history. According to the plan released by the Chinese National Space Administration, it is planned to deliver about 2 kilograms of soil samples to Earth.
