I believe this is especially true for Donald Trump.

Populism is essentially just pandering to as many people as humanly possible. In the eyes of his followers, Donald Trump is a defiant truthteller and America's last beacon of hope.

Liberals have convinced themselves that Hillary Clinton is not complete trash too, although they dare not uphold her as a saint or anything.
