I am not impressed at all with this type of excuse from a presidential appointee. This is nothing more than the same ole same corrupt business as usual.
Geithner apologizes for not paying taxes
Yahoo said:
WASHINGTON – Treasury Secretary-designate Timothy Geithner said Wednesday he was careless in failing to pay $34,000 in Social Security and Medicare taxes earlier this decade but declared "I have paid what I owed" and apologized to Congress.

He told the Senate Finance Committee he was sorry that his past transgressions were now an issue in his confirmation at a time of deepening economic distress. He urged Congress to act quickly and forcibly to deal with the crisis. A top administration priority is to foster economic recovery and "get credit flowing again," Geithner testified.

As to his failure to pay payroll taxes from 2001 to 2004 while he worked for the International Monetary Fund, Geithner said: "These were careless mistakes. They were avoidable mistakes."

The guy fucked up and made some stupid mistakes. That doesn't effect his ability to run the Treasury Department. He should and will be confirmed.

Nope sorry excuses such as, "uh duh, I did not think I have to pay my taxes" should not qualify anyone in such a position.

If the people do not stand for accountability in leadership then we are all screwed. If someone makes such "stupid mistakes" they sure do not belong in a position such as a treasury secretary.

It is as bad as a bank shorting an account $80,000.00 through creative accounting to call a loan later in an attempt to steal what the bank was never entitled. In my thoughts it is just not acceptable.

If in fact it was just a mistake he is to dumb for the office.

Really? What about Henry Paulson? Does this mean that he should be forgiven also?

I mean......all he really did was make some stupid mistakes with the economy, right?

Failing to pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes when you are in the business of HANDLING MONEY is not a stupid mistake. It's a crime. If you can't see that, my guess is you're a criminal too.

This sort of tax evasion is the way we nail mob gangsters when you can't find a witness to testify against them.

Hey......they've been doing that for a couple of years now Malibu.

Hear about the day care in Texas that was filming kiddie porn in front of a whole room full of adults?

They gave the kids drugs and called them "happy pills" or "silly pills", and then had them have sex with each other up on a table in the front of the room.

And, let's not forget Michael Jackson and his "Jesus juice".

Well.....if we were still prior to January 20th, they'd all get forgiven and sent home with a small fine and MAYBE a small bit of jail time.

Abramhoff, the ENRON idiots, etc.

I hope Obama doesn't keep him, and I hope he doesn't get appointed.

The quickest way for a company to go broke is to allow a thief and embezzler into the area that controls the purse strings.

I agree. If it had been his income tax I'd say it disqualified him. But if you read the facts it is a pretty common mistake, even for tax accountants to make. Maybe he'll move to simplify the tax code.

So are we to expect four years of careless, avoidable mistakes in his running of the Treasury Department?

Once is happenstance, twice is circumstance, third time is overt enemy action........

One year is happenstance, two years is circumstance, three years makes you a thief.
