New "Clean Start" Policy on Creating Threads

Not open for further replies.
I noticed there is a new one down there too, called Trash Can. But...when I clicked it it said I didn't have permission to view it. Whats that one? Threads you put in their instead of shoving them in a drawer in the mod section?
I remember my old board. I had a place like that. Didn't want to delete them complelety..just in case its needed to look at again later on....but not wanting people to see where I stashed it.

It sounds as if the Mods are looking for a new user base. I’m quite positive the bulk of the users here seek the very “inflammatory” discussion the mods seem to detest.
NOBODY spends time here with the intent to change minds and almost NO political discussion ANYWHERE stays civil and polite. Further, almost no thread without “BAIT” is very active, it’s the bait that encourages users to engage.

So -- you're telling me that straight informative titles ruin your fun? Depends on what you're here for doesn't it?

Here's the solution.. You got your own MMA type "engagement" forums in Badlands, Rubber Room.. We'll even give you a new taunting forum for Political warfare with no survivors... You can name it.. Maybe the "BrokeLoser -- Nobody WINS" forum...

Most folks aint got the time to waste on Troll on Troll violence and snark... It's a fact. And especially, we CAN NOT COMPETE with Twitter in that category and don't even want to be in the species with Twitter...

We always HAVE been a Discussion board. We've always focused almost solely on getting thread topics to be discussed and not on arbitrary content issues.. STILL completely committed to the Free Speech thing.. But lately, the thread titles and Opening Posts have been giving Free Speech a bad name..

The basic rules are not gonna change much.. There's already a clause for not allowing "baiting and polarizing" Titles and OPs. That will be footnoted with something like the following..

Titles and Opening Posts
1) Title must contain sufficient clues about the ACTUAL expected discussion. Titles like "How stupid are These People" can't be SEARCHED or indexed for search for the use of members or mods to find and manage existing active threads.

2) Titles must be free of INFLAMMATORY words, name calling or "pet names".. Those things are what make a title "baiting".

3) The "user content" in OPs that the existing rules require needs to be "stepped up".. "Get a load of this" -- is no longer sufficient topical content"... Must be 2 lines or more.. The more the better.. Must SUMMARIZE the topic to be discussed and why you think it NEEDS discussion..

To sum that up.. We're REQUIRING the Original Posters to START a clean topical discussion.,. No more juiced incendiary titles and ranting OPs.. If it's important enough for you to dash to a keyboard to poke it in -- need to put in the effort to start the discussion with YOUR views of the topic..

Post Content
Currently the Rules require "specific topical content" in EVERY post.. And the moderation method for that is stone simple..

Post has "specific topical content" --- stop reading, ignore the rest, it's legal.
Post LACKS "specific topical content" -- It's illegal.. Delete and/or warn...

1) That rule will edited to read "must contain substantial and relevant topical content".. This means that unsubstantiated generalizations about groups or political opponents is NOT ALONE sufficient as "specific topical content" anymore.. Yeah, you have to stop and think and spend a few calories composing a post..

2) Repetition, badgering, harassment, and repeatedly ignoring requests to clarify or answer questions MAY get you booted or warned... This may be specified in the official rules in the coming days.

3) Meme pics are OK - if they are about topic and NOT just personal and fit the definition of substantial and relevant.

4) Posts on the 1st two opening pages of a thread will be CHECKED by moderation when they visit.. These will be HIGHLY moderated, because the course of thread is determined largely in the 1st pages... If you're caught dropping into a brand new topic just to attack or flame -- you'll be warned and banned for one day.. Assuming there isn't more damage to the thread later on.. If you don't care to DISCUSS the topic first -- DONT DROP IN.. This is probably the most common issue we have with "tone", anger, and stinkyness of this place lately. It's a personality pile-on on Pg1.. Not happening anymore.. Keep a distance from members you consider "retards or morons".. Just ignore what you consider to be crap.. Don't prance thru it barefoot..

Transparency on Warnings.

In addition, to add to visibility of who and what is being warned, Moderation will be leaving visible WARNED posts and adding a flag like -- Mod Note: This is a WARNED post.. Do not reply to it.

Obviously it's a bit of public shaming, but more IMPORTANTLY it gives members feedback about the MASSIVE amount of work that moderation does here everyday.. It's also important to see EXAMPLES what what content and material is actionable and we HOPE folks will see daily what rules are enforced and how..

Note that we cannot do this for EVERY post that went into the warning.. If the member was warned for 3 or 10 posts -- the others will simply be deleted.. So you still wont know the EXTENT of ALL the work that was done on that thread, but it's a start on moderation transparency..

When we say "do not reply" we mean it.. If you have questions -- PM a mod or two..

---------------------------------------------------------

How about we stop there and make these adjustments and hope that improves the tone and anger issues? We realize that the problems this nation face right now don't ORIGINATE on USMB.. We just want to prove that Discussion boards are still relevant to IMPROVING the discussion in the land.. Understand that a fair number of members are here for the brawl.. That's why we created the Taunting Forums.. They are not gulags for punishment.. They are there for folks that WANT to brawl and not be constrained to topics.. We won't be moving as much stuff "downstairs".. A fair portion of failed threads will likely get closed instead.. But if you want ranty/flamey titles/OP/Posts -- we'll open more downstairs forums for that..

And still, yo uhave not answered my question. Do these new rules pertain to FZ BL and RR?

Not one bit.. There's no topics in Zone3.. Also nothing valuable to "keep on topic".. In fact, those that dont want to "up their game" a bit -- can hang and just IGNORE everything but the Site Wide Rules section..

Mod Staff has been allowed "editorial control" on rules and policies since CK left.. Mod Staff is also tired of reading the same brawls over and over again.. With the tone and anger getting nastier -- we just realized, we can't read this crap anymore for 3 to 6 hours a day...

I hear ya. I mentioned in a thread not too long ago that I would never want to be a mod. But IMO you can’t force debate by placing restrictions. The clean debate forum is lacking in substance just like the other forums. Bottom line, I don’t think it will work.

ok. i will give it a shot.

The thread about biden asking a black journalist if he was a junkie was locked.

The reason state being there were other thread about it....like where? I checked that was the only thread in 'politics' regarding biden asking a black journalist if he was a junkie???

I am getting e mails from folks who have just been recently banned. What is going on?

as already stated, we have Zone 3, (Rubber Room, Badlands, and Flame Zone), for that type interaction.

Which is HIDDEN from the general public....or didn't you know that?

It's hidden because it's largely unmoderated.. A couple sex threads and we'd lose our AD services... Sorry -- but that's business these days on the web...

There are "redirect links" -- that stay around for any time from a couple hours to 6 or 8 hours.. These should lead you to the merge.. If you have the original thread title or Author -- contact me in PMessage and I'll find it for you.. I imagine that probably 3 or more threads got merged on that topic..

Just two posts up from the quoted post here, you said you want the ability to delete posts, no questions asked. You remind me of Pelosi: Ice cream for me but not for thee. Or Chris Cuomo: quarantine for thee but not me. Or Fauci: masks for thee but not for me.

Idiotic post....I answered an earlier one from you but you have no idea what I'm talking about and are kissing up to the Admin so as to be spared next time you step on your hand. Comparing me to that witch or the midget Fauci tells me you're oblivious to reality.

I doubt the mods see it as kissing up to them. I started a thread on the topic of this thread. I've questioned the mods here, too. I simply pointed out the obvious difference between your two posts. Own it. Don't attack the messenger.

I don't generally rely on or ask government for help and I don't generally rely on or ask moderators for help. If someone says something offensive to me, I can handle it. If I say something offensive to them, they should handle it. It teaches weakness to ask others to report to mommy and daddy when their feelings are hurt. I won't do it. I'll try to follow the rules because I respect the private property rights of the site owner. I'll likely get some warnings and bans because I won't always be able to bite my tongue. I'll just have to deal with it unless or until it just isn't worth dealing with.

Eh...I just won’t post any more threads. No biggie.
I was thinking the same thing. And when I did..it was usually in General Discussion where nothing really matters...or so they said.
There IS a place not far from here that is mainly debating politics. USMB was not counted as a debate forum. Its a discussion forum. Chit chat. Disagreements. Bickering. Laughs. Hanging out. But its getting a bit...whats the word I want?....uppity in how to start a topic, where to start a topic, how many sentences must be used in said topic, what words can and cannot be used in the title of the topic, yadda yadda.
I'll pass. Too much to remember. Sooooooooooo.....nope.
I post using my phone. Starting threads is already kind of a hassle even without the 2 sentence / 14 ( approved word ) rule. So. I just will decline doing it. I’ll stick to topics already open.

Even tho we chose a forum app that handles mobile "just OK" -- to be honest, phones aint for watching movies or discussion boards.. They are more for SnapChat and Twitter.. It's just a reality.. I don't know why anyone would discuss anything deeper than the length of a text message..

If you could ask Marshall McCluhan back in the 70s what was gonna happen sociologically when random anonymous people were connected routinely by electronics -- he would tell ya -- it's not gonna improve understanding or discourse... It's gonna MAKE US -- more tribal and wary of "the other"...
Unfortunately that’s all I have. My home computer is work related and it’s against HIPPA to use it for personal reasons.

Every board I have been on has been “ tribal “(cliquey). So I can agree with you there.

With the timing in mind, this all smells like fish.
Be honest, did USMD get BLM'd.....did they threaten to 'cancel' USMB?
OR....did USMD simply drink the BLM Kool-Aid?

With the timing in mind, this all smells like fish.
Be honest, did USMD get BLM'd.....did they threaten to 'cancel' USMB?
OR....did USMD simply drink the BLM Kool-Aid?

I think it's called "denutted."
