Socialist paradises Venezuela and Argentina, as well as conservatards' hero Putin's Russia.

Inflation is a disease that can wreck a society, Milton Friedman, the late Nobel laureate economist, once said. Add rising unemployment to the diagnosis, and his profession ascribes a rather non-technical term to the debilitating effect on people: misery.

That affliction this year will be most acute in Venezuela, Argentina, South Africa, Ukraine and Greece — the five most painful economies in which to live and work, according to Bloomberg survey data that make up the so-called misery index for 2015. (It's a simple equation: unemployment rate + change in the consumer price index = misery.)

Notice that the closer a country follows the liberal economic agenda, the higher it is on the misery index.

What is the liberal economic agenda? I notice a number of nations such as Sweden, Denmark and US are not on this misery chart. Do the nations not on the chart follow the conservative agenda?

What is the liberal economic agenda?

welfare entitlements which discourage both the giver and receiver not to work.

this is why China switched to the conservative agenda to instantly eliminate 40% of the world's poverty.

They follow it more closely than the nations on the top of the misery index. Sweden and Denmark are largely capitalists nations. They interfere with private business a lot less than countries like Venezuela, and their governments are not total corrupt like Venezuela's.

Then how come California is a less miserable place to live than Okielahoma or Kansas? Ok, they're not countries but still....

Who says it is? How many Californian's do you imaging live in houses on the beach? There are lot's of lower income folks living two or three families to a house. When I was contracting in San Francisco, a lot of the consultants on my project were sharing a bedroom - not an apartment, a bedroom.

Yeah, that's some good living there.

Ca. is very very rich in resources and on the ocean so is not like kansas at all.

California is beautiful, but only the rich can afford to live decently there. When a three bedroom ranch costs over $1 million, it's not a place for people with modest incomes.

Yeah, that's some good living there.

Because Frisco has very high rents. People are willing to pay the high rents to live there. The misery index usually gets worse in right to work for less, republican run states.

So why and how did Cuba and Mexico miss this chart?
Cuba doesn't have a fungible currency, so inflation is a meaningless concept there. Mexico isn't that bad of a place to live for most of it's people. The poverty is concentrated near our border, so Americans think Mexico is wallowing in poverty.

Rents are high because the state and local government severely limit the amount of housing that can be built there.

It's really tough on working stiffs. Another reason for raising the minimum wage.

Why not just get rid of all the regulations that reduce the supply of housing?
