WASHINGTON — President Obama will use the power of his office to push for adoption of so-called smart gun technology that could eventually limit the use of a firearm to its owner, the White House announced Friday morning.

The move is intended to allow Mr. Obama to confront firearms violence in the face of fierce opposition to broader gun control measures. But critics of smart gun technology, including some police officials, are expected to fight a proposal that they see as unproven and an unwarranted restriction on the freedom to use firearms.

The initiative was unveiled on the White House website, along with a report from the administration’s law enforcement agencies concluding that the government should do more to spur development of the technologies. To that end, the Defense and Justice Departments will develop criteria for gun manufacturers who want to sell smart guns to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

Best of luck, fellas.

Electronic "safety" features promulgated by government are to be there for the government to turn off your ability to use the weapon, effectively disarming you in violation of the 2nd Amendment.
Also... any EMP is going to disable the weapon... so your tool to defend yourself and your family becomes a useless bit of metal.
As referenced in the article, these measures won't stop criminals.
Can you make a weapon that won't fire?
Sure.. and that seems to be the purpose of the federal push here.

This would probably have all the lobbyists up in arms, but how about a device embedded into the weapon that once it is issued, it genetically imprints to that person and can never be shot by anyone else?

The best safety ever invented is the one between your ears. Libs never figured out how to use it, so they need technology to tell them if the coffee is hot, the light is red, the gun is ready, or when the lottery drawing is.

Having smart guns could save 600 lives a year and thousands of injuries.

How would a smart gun legally purchased by someone who has passed the background check prevent them from going on a killing spree? I ask because I believe most if not all the recent mass shooters got their guns legally with background checks.

Great, prove it on the Secret Service's guns first for a decade or so.
Then the FBI, and work it and work it down to local LEOs. (Like that will ever happen).

It would stop their kid from accidently or intentionally killing someone. That happens quite often.

Unless the kid finds away around the technology let's face it they understand that stuff way better than the parents do.

The goal isn't to save lives, or make guns safer, it is disarmament. The UN is well aware that we have the right to bear arms, they just don't want us to. Our Constitution is a real thorn in the UN's side.

Their representative in our oval office won't ask us to comply, he/she will permit gun manufactures to be sued and eventually prohibit the sale of ammunition, while training the millennials to believe that they don't need guns to protect them. They have safe rooms. Aunt Hillary will protect you.
If you try to hide guns they will remove your family to a detention center. Maybe you did sell that gun, maybe you didn't, but your children will be removed from the "hostile environment" regardless.
That is why a registry is so very important. Don't register? Would a mandatory 50 year prison sentence and the confiscation of everything your family owns if you get caught give you pause?

There is only one way to prevent this, and that is to vote in an American who holds close to the Constitution, instead of this steady stream of globals we keep electing. If we don't start standing up for our rights, we will have nothing left to protect.

How many hundreds and thousands of civilians and LEOs will die when the "Smart" technology fails and their firearms refuse to work? I will never own a gun with an active "Smart" device in or on it. Who knows, maybe I can find guns like my S&W M&P9..... the first time it went to the gunsmith the magazine disconnect safety mysteriously stopped working.
