A sad day in the USA, the worst winter storm this year, people fear freezing to death, as Solar and Wind power fail across New England.

If only they had a chunk of Coal.
 
Did the wind terbines freeze stuck?
Literally, yes. Snow and ice on the turbine blades unbalance the turbine, further gusting storm winds buffet the wind turbine. They are 100% shutdown, no power from wind during this emergency. No energy from solar during this emergency.

Wind turbines need perfect wind, not to strong, not to light, the wind must be just right.
 
Just imagine when New England is 100% Green, Clean, Renewable energy, War or Storm, with no electricity they are a liability to our safety and welfare.

Greg Wortham of Sweetwater, executive director for Texas Wind Energy Clearinghouse, said the snow and cold did not affect the turbines. By contrast, plants using water or fossil fuel encountered frozen water lines or other problems with the cold.

"The wind farms provided approximately 7 percent of the energy during the blackouts," he said. Since the transmission lines connect directly to many West Texas communities, they received the extra power.

I provided a link where the conventional power generation plants failed during a storm, and the wind turbines did not. Now you provide a link that shows where the turbines failed, and the conventional power stations did not.

UK Wind Power Exceeds Coal During Storm Continues to Break Energy Records EcoWatch

As the UK cleans up after being lashed by the remnants of Hurricane Bertha, which brought summer flooding and travel disruption, it is also reaping the benefits of a boost to the country’s wind industry brought by the storm, with output hitting near record highs.

Wind power met almost 16 percent of the UK’s power demand on Monday morning, and 13.1 percent of demand over the preceding 24 hours.

The strong performance meant wind power output exceeded coal power—which accounted for 11.3 percent, according to trade body EnergyUK.

It also took output to levels close to the record set during last December when wind energy met 10 percent of electricity demand throughout the month and peaked at 17 percent of demand.

The UK has broken a series of wind records over the past 12 months, and last week new government figures confirmed that 2013 had seen around 15 percent of electricity in the country come from renewables—7.9 percent of which was provided by onshore and offshore wind turbines.

The plentiful supply of wind energy is also helping to pick up the slack this week as French energy companies EDF was forced to shut down four nuclear reactors in the UK.

Yes, it is about cost, and wind, per kilowatt, is now cheaper than the dirtiest of coal. And solar soon will be. And wind and solar have very low external costs as compared to the damage that coal does. So wind and solar are the future, coal is the past, soon to be relegated to the same bin as horse drawn wagons for commercial freight.

You have yet to post anything from New England, which had to shutdown a 100% of all Wind Turbines.

No Wind Turbine operates in a storm with hurricane force winds, many are designed to be shutdown in winds above 40 mph, some operate at a higher speed but none operate in sub-zero temperatures during a severe blizzard.

Further, wind turbine farms must be hooked up to a fossil fuel electricity source to keep the heaters on, got to keep those blades and gearbox warm.
