What, specifically, do all the bars control? They are, as follows: 31Hz; 62; 125; 500; 1KHz; 2; 4; 8; 16KHz.

It's the software version of a graphic equalizer

The sliders to the left control bass, the middle controls (you guessed it) midrange and the right controls high-end.


Generally you want a sloping valley, with high lows, mid-to-low mids, and mid-to-high highs, although it always depends on what you want your player tuned for. WMP has some presets that will automatically adjust the EQ for you, and you can see how different settings are changed for different goals.

Of course the best way to learn is to just play with them while a song is going, and listen to how the sound changes.
