Of course the BBC fails to note that the "white supremacists" in question were democrat party activists. A republican (McKinley) was in the white house and the "Solid (democrat) South" was seething about it. Republican McKinley was assassinated and the democrat party continued to use the KKK as political muscle well into the 20th century. FDR appointed a former KKK member to the Supreme Court,

North Carolina was very liberal back in 1898, went heavily for WJ Bryan, the leftist candidate in 1896.

At last! Someone here seems to have read their homework, even if he's missing part of the story.

1898 was during one of our times when the parties were changing. The Civil War was a generation earlier, Reconstruction had been over for decades, business was booming, everyone was moving, and as peoples' priorities changed, so did their politics. There had been a financial crash five years earlier and a two-year war had just ended, but the relatively new pro-business President was starting to install some public confidence.

There were three major movements at the time. The Democrats had been a mix of conservative Southern whites and northern Republican business interests since the Civil War, the Republicans were anti-corruption and pro-modernization to build a stronger financial future, and the Populists were for the rights of the masses, mostly farmers and rural working class, who felt they were often being steamrolled by financial shenanigans. WJ Bryan—a Populist with crazy skills on the mic—convinced enough of the southern white Democrats that his financial ideas (the silver standard) would put more money in their pockets, rather than those of the fat cats, that they handed him the party. The northern money Democrats, already pissed at D President Cleveland for that money crash in 1893—were easy pickings for McKinley's moon-promising Republican party with its big business reforms and booming future prospects. And thus, the parties realigned.

But they were still at the early part, and Wilmington was its own place. It was the biggest city in North Carolina, was majority black and leaned Republican in a mostly-still-Democrat south. There, black Republicans (now building their own businesses and looking to be allowed into the American dream) and Populists (fed up with fat-cat manipulation and wanting social programs and self-governance) created the Fusion Party. This left the Southern, conservative, white, suuuuuuuuper-racist Democrats, who had been festering for years, on the outside looking in. Then, well, you saw the rest.

Polishprince is correct in that North Carolina went for Williams Jennings Bryan, the demagogue who unified farmers, the working class, and white supremacists on the new Democrat ticket. However, New Hanover County, which includes Wilmington, went heavily for William McKinley's pro-reform Republican party, which by then included many of the business and money people who had just turned away from the Democrats. This was a case of right-wing, conservative Democrats staging an insurrection against left-wing, progressive Republicans and Populists.

Back in the old days America had the courage to deal with Negros getting too uppity and that was a good thing.
