Reading, math & so on and so forth. <---- Those basic lessons served our ancestors well when the average job was on a production line or farm. You didn't need specialized skills to get ahead in life then.
Then of course there is the absurdity of most traditional college majors....History, English, Theology and so on.
Todays students need the basics, yes. BUT almost more than that we need to be teaching our kids the skills that todays jobs demand. Simply throwing money at our education system is pointless when no pertinent skills are learned. Our kids graduate with barely the knowledge to do basic geometry and 0 knowledge on how computers are built or the software is written. Almoat every young person I know that knows anything about technology is self taught.
We need to stop forcing needless classes on our college students just for the sake of having enough credits to graduate and focus on the things needed to prosper in life.
History and all the other basic classes are important but no more so than other areas that are required in today's world to have a shot at success.
It's like having an oil leak in your car. Simply throwing more money into more oil solves nothing except bleeding your wallet. At some point you have to face the real problem. And money ISNT our problem.

At one time college was to prepare young gentleman of leisure for life as an adult gentleman of leisure; now, for many, college seems to be viewed as a job-training program for the riff-raff. Maybe we need schools for both, but the job training schools, should do that, train for jobs, a variety of jobs. Students desires, aptitudes, and other requirements might be tested so that students, instead of wanting to be doctors or astronauts as cemented down in childhood can be placed in courses and programs that better suit their abilities and latent interests. As it is, young people know so little of the job inventory. Should schools teach skills and knowledge that parents should teach? Schools pick up many of those parenting responsibilities that are not taught by parents.
I wonder how many jobs require geometry?

Why our education system is failing our children

Because that's how it's designed by the Democrat/Communist Party in order to create generations of uneducated, government dependent slaves who cannot name three Founding Fathers if you spotted them Jefferson and Adams and think capitalism is evil

Until our parents, all of them, are willing to be involved with their kids schooling before and after school, the country will have this problem.

"Because that's how it's designed by the Democrat/Communist Party in order to create generations of uneducated, government dependent slaves who cannot name three Founding Fathers if you spotted them Jefferson and Adams and think capitalism is evil."

Funny. I see it this way then. The GOP wants people to be uneducated so they have degrees then they don't have to be paid a decent wage. The CEO needs people to do the heavy lifting so the CEO can make his/her millions while paying the heavy lifters $12 an hour. An educated work force isn't going to stand up to garbage like that very long.

So why should students be required to name three founding fathers?

Because it is designed to produce workers rather than people who know enough to serve their own economic interests.

If double-entry accounting had been mandatory in the schools how many people would have been dumb enough to get caught in the housing bubble by taking out loans they could never repay?

Double-entry accounting is 700 years old. Are we supposed to believe men smart enough to fix automobiles can't do accounting on computers that do all of the idiotic busywork.

No the workers are supposed to be suckers.

And because of the limitations placed upon our principals and teachers and also because of the parents and their non-involvement and not holding up for the schools position, rather, the child's side of things. Passivity is ruining our children. PC is ruining America. Indoctrination has taking over.

But you don't actually know any real CEO's right? All you know is what you've read in "Little Red Book" And "Dreams of My Real Father Frank Marshall Davis" where Obama tells us that working in the "Private sector" (Dry cleaners, diners, supermarkets, gas stations) is "Behind enemy lines

parents who don't want to be bothered send their kids off to school to be dealt with but the schools have been rendered as ineffective as the parents who don't care

Yup. I remember getting paddled in school. Do that now and wind up getting sued, fired & possibly jailed for child abuse.

We no longer have an "education system"!

What we have is a government babysitter and guaranteed income for teachers who cannot otherwise contribute to society. It is also a home for unqualified bureaucrats who spend their time establishing rules and regulations designed to dumb down our children to make them further dependent upon government handouts.

We need to return to the days of the guilds.

Let those who know how teach our youth to perform useful tasks with good chances of personal advancement.

The educational system has failed because we distribute grades under the assumption that we are redistributing intelligence.
