UBL was mostly pissed off about American culture power and the presence of US military bases in the Arabian peninsula, which he considered sacred ground due to being the home country of his prophet. He declared war on the US in the early 90s and proceeded to blow up our shit. It took 9/11 for the American people to get off their collective asses and ask themselves what an "Akido" was and why it sounded vaguely familiar (because they heard that name connected to all of the previous attacks by that organization they paid little attention to). UBL cut his teeth as an Islamist leader in Afghanistan against the Soviet troops trying to secure the newly formed Communist government after a coup deposed the Afghan king. Before that he was just a normal rich Arab college kid until the Muslim Brotherhood recruited him. The Muslim Brotherhood really, really wanted to see Islam be a dominant nation state again and created many franchises, spin offs, and front groups to make this happen. I... could make this a tl; dr post, but I think it will suffice to say that the problems with Islamic religious violence have been around for longer than the US has existed let alone been a major military power.

America is a nation founded on war. The British, then the genocide of the natives and on from there. The continued preference for war though is because of various things. How for-profit corporations supply everything used in a war so naturally they need wars to deplete reserves and purchase more. If we never had a war, or they were too infrequent, the corporations actually running the country wouldn't make as much money. So long as wars make people money (read, war profiteering) we're gonna have lots of wars. Same thing seen with the prison complex. If incarcerating people is a business, we're gonna incarcerate lots of people.

After the profit-motive for wars, our nation being grounded in a religion that suppresses sexuality means people will try and fill the void of pleasure in their lives with some other pleasure. Studies show the relationship between suppression of pleasure and increases in violence. Where pleasure is encouraged, violence is all but non-existant. So long as we push the Christian religion with its anti-sex message, teach children abstinance, and say sex should wait until marriage, the resulting sexual frustration will manifest as violence.

The truth is there is something seriously wrong with a nation of people that have kept 2 bears in this kind of horrific mystery and torment for 2 decades - TWENTY LONG YEARS - and no one once complained about it? Not once did a Russian ever complain about it and say this is wrong? It took an American or a European to come from another country during Olympics - stumble upon what was going on and report it. It's disgusting.
