Why are House Democrats stonewalling questions about the identity of the Trump-Ukraine whistleblower?

Start by taking them at their word. Perhaps they really are concerned about the whistleblower's personal safety. They also know that, beyond a limited prohibition applying only to the inspector general of the intelligence community, no law bars anyone -- in politics, media or anywhere else -- from revealing the whistleblower's identity. So they worry.

But there is more to the story. Should the whistleblower have connections to prominent Democrats, exposure of his identity could be embarrassing to the party. And perhaps most of all, reading through the impeachment inquiry depositions that have been released so far, it's clear that cutting off questions that could possibly relate to the whistleblower has also allowed Democrats to shut off any look at how the Trump-Ukraine investigation started.

BJ- They don't want the public to know the origins of anything bad.
All bad roads lead directly to Democratic Corruption.

Why does the GOP care who the whistleblower was? Everything he claimed has been confirmed by others. Are the GOP trying to deflect maybe?

That's not even remotely true.
All you have is an agglomeration of
Unsubstantiated confirmation bias
Nothing more.

To impeach the credibility of this key witness.

It has nothing to do with "deflection" but just making sure the so-called whistleblower is on the up and up, and not motivated by partisan politics.

If they are partisan, it really doesn't matter what they say, their word isn't any good.

Their word has ALREADY been confirmed by other sources, so it has been confirmed they are on the up and up. Their motivation is moot, they told the truth.

What they told is the Truth about their opinion. So far there has been no actual confirmation of any of the allegations.
Remember...anyone can allege anything at anytime no matter how preposterous.

Since the whistle blower has no first hand knowledge, why does their opinion even matter? Why does the GOP wish to expose and question someone with no first hand knowledge when they don't demand to hear from people who do have first hand knowledge?

Precisely because he cannot technically be a whistleblower.

That is not true but it is irrelevant. The whistle has been blown, the phone call is now public knowledge. The whistle blower has nothing more to add and should be ignored.
