Evidently Pelosi can't.

Especially with Dem Jane Harmon who is well-qualified and next in line for heading up the Intelligence committee. Chris Mathews tried to find out why. Evidently Harmon tries too much to get along with the Bush administration...

Also, it looks like Nancy is going to pick an Hispanic over a Black for leadership of the Intelligence committee:

"Speaker Pelosi, Speaker-designate Pelosi is not going to yield on Jane Harman on the intelligence committee, and a little-known decision by Rahm Emanuel not to challenge an African-American congressman for the whip post means that the Congressional black leadership will feel that they have already been mollified," Mitchell claimed. "This will take Alcee Hastings, an African-American off the waiting list for intelligence and they're going to go to an Hispanic for intelligence."

Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), who is Hispanic, is the third-ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee

Reyes is a former U.S. Border Control agent. He, of course, is against anything that is "anti-immigrant" and led the opposition against the House immigration proposal known as the "Sensenbrenner bill". Great choice for heading up the intelligence committee....
