Why can't we legislate an state level opt-out for S.S., medicade, and this healthcare program? People in states that do want these programs can elect to have them but people in states that don't want to participate in them can opt-out.

Opt out and then not pay and later move to a state that has not opted out and go on the draw?

It can be available for citizens of that state only. Social Security can then be funded by your citizenship status of a state that participates in that. The same thing can be done for medicare and all that other stuff.

Well there kind of, sort of, is an "opt out" on the Individual Mandate... only it's not really an "opt out", it's more of a waiver :eusa_eh:... and you can only get it if you can make your version of Obamacare an economically superior one ... which ain't never gonna happen because the hoops you have to jump through in order to encompass the specific requirements of Obamacare have no basis in economic rationality.

Oh... and if you miraculously find a way to do that, some bureaucrat can still deny your waiver, and even if you actually do get one... your state's citizens and employers are still going to have to pay for every other state to have it.

Yet even presuming states wanted to do something pro-market, they would only be able to apply for these waivers starting in 2017, and the waivers in question would have to meet standards for “cost containment” and “improving the delivery system” — standards which can be very fluid. As with any regulatory issue that shifts at the whim of the party in power, this will almost certainly lead to more litigation as to what all of these terms mean for the states in terms of tangible, measurable standards.

Nor can states be made exempt from the tax increases for individuals and employers, the cuts in Medicare, the newly expanded unfunded liabilities in Medicaid, and a host of other aspects of this bill. Of course states could set up their own programs to cover people, but that would be a waiver almost no state would want to accept, given that they can’t prohibit their taxpayer dollars from going to fund this reform elsewhere.

Citizens of a state? Sounds like the former USSR.

If the southern states opt out will all the retirees start moving to Canada?

The government cannot allow you to opt out because that would be tantamount to admitting that you can think for yourself.

And admitting that people can actually make the best choices for themselves is antithetical to the Dimmy/Progressive credo

Despite your sarcasm I'm going to entertain this post. Most people won't opt out of those because of to many retirees and people that are already invested in those programs but people should have a choice. I don't see what is the big deal about a state opting out of something.

Why can't I opt out for paying for schools? My kids are grown
Why can't I opt out of Police and Fire protection? I never use them
Why can't I opt out of paying for troops in Iraq? I never supported that war

We live in a society. As part of a society, money is collected and used for the greater good. People elect Mayors, governors, congressmen and presidents to determine what the greater good is.

That is what happened last week

Nice, in theory.

In practice, I don't think you, I, or anyone else much knows what happened last week.

You can. Nothing's stopping you except the difficulty of electing enough representatives who will pass opt-out laws.

Well, the federal government doesn't make you pay school taxes, your state and your school district do, presumably. So all you have to do is get your fellow state residents/voters to elect a majority of state legislators and school district board members who wil say, okay, now all school taxes are optional!!

Good luck with that!!

Sure we know what happened last week. We elected Representatives to develop a national healthcare plan. That is what they did.

If you don't like it, feel free to elect representatives who will repeal it.

That is the way a Republic works

My point is, that you have no idea what "develop a national healthcare plan" means.

I'm not being condescending: Niether do I.

Thanks....so i think I get it now

We elect people at the local, state and federal level to represent us. Those elected officials get to decide what is best for the society as a whole. If we are not happy with what they did, we get to elect someone else.

Is that what the Constitution is all about??

Unfortunately, that's the way government works. Lawmakers trade favors all the time to get their bills passed.

And the "CF" isn't for health care, it's for health insurance. If the insurance companies policed themselves a little better, there'd be no need for additional regulation.

If you want to talk about a REAL CF, let's talk the Iraq war. How much has that little gem cost us, in money and in lives?
