While the Fate of the Furious achievement was certainly impressive and measured strictly in absolute numbers its results dwarfed those of the Indian film, it was merely an incremental improvement over the previous Hollywood record. In fact, in inflation-adjusted dollars Furious actually scored a slightly lesser opening than Force Awakens.

Baahubali, on the other hand, didn’t merely surpass the previous record for an Indian movie, it absolutely demolished it. Before last Friday, the high water mark among Indian movie opening weekends was the INR 180 crore ($28 million) record set by Sultan in 2016. Baahubali 2 nearly tripled that record.

For Fate of the Furious to match the scale of that feat, it would have had to gross $1.5 billion in its debut weekend.

When one considers the market constraints that Indian movies face, Baahubali’s success becomes all the more impressive.

For instance, whereas the average movie ticket price in the U.S. is over $8.00, and is even higher in several of the key international territories where Fate of the Furious opened, movie ticket prices in India are among the world’s lowest, at an average of less than $3.00. This factor alone accounts for much of the difference in the results for Baahubali versus Furious.
