We need to have all of our grid ready for the big one. We need to have back up equipment ready to go on a moments notice buried underground. While the recovery wouldn't be quick its better that not being prepared and being stuck in the dark for decades. Millions if not billions will die and we're seemingly doing nothing to prepare?

Yup if the Carrington event that happened in 1859 happened today we would be back to the 1800's. No cars, phones or electricity.

Hell during that event people could read by the aurora borealis at night. Teletypes ran themselves.

We've been hit a few times since then but if we get a big on we will all be back in the 1800's.

As fas as I know a big outburst of the sun is specially a problem for our communication systems and for power plants and electricity in general including all machines, which need electricity. And as far as I know exist different emergency plans for such scenarios. Satellites for example turn around and protect their sensors and electronic. And cities without electricity are also not a big fun if the electricity comes not back as soon as possible. A good idea could it be to make more depots with emergency parts and spare parts.

In 2013 in Germany we officially remembered the pandemic hundred years ago. In this context our scientists made clear what are problems in Germany, if a new pandemic will come. Noth enough masks - not enough desinfactants and so on and so on. No one thought a pandemic will come - and so no one did do what had been important to be done. Reason: Costs money. A little while later we had to waste dollars instead of cents for the things, which were missed, when Corona came.
