Thought just occured, why are repressive anti-humanist religions so wildly popular when permissive ones aren't despite those sometimes being much older?

Christianity and Islam make up the bulk of human religion, yet both represent the most repressive religious systems. Whereas paganism, Wicca, and other nature-based faiths never spread globally like the repressive ones. Are we naturally masochistic we like being told not to do things or else, whereas too much freedom isn't anything we desire?

Thought occured watching "Marvel: Avengers" where Loki orders the Germans down on their knees monlogueing about how we prefer subjugation. Was he right? We voluntarily submit to repressive religions with lots of rules rather than pursue more humanistic systems.

Do you do well in the world when you become a drunkard ,druggie, or thief?
Nature based faiths required human sacrifices.

Ask President Bush if being a drunk druggy makes one successful. Ask Wall Street if being a thief works.

Shintoism doesn't require human sacrifice. Perfectly happy peaceful religion but limited to mostly Japanese followers.

Ask obama if being a coke and pot head made him for gay marriage before he was against gay marriage before he was for gay marriage again.

That was likely more about him thinking of his legacy as the first black President and not wanting his being first to make it harder for the next black.

You are mistaken. Wicca / Satanism / occult is the fastest growing trend in America today. Not Christianity or Islam. The occult - their sales pitch to recruit new members - Do what thou wilt. No sinful pleasure is forbidden that I know of...however........ They do not bother to tell them it is going to cost them their own soul and eternity in hell.

Both Bush and Obama stopped and they became successful.
Anytime Wall Street becomes that way they lose a lot of money.

Shinto wasn't always peaceful.
In 1596 in Japan, the followers of the goddess worshiping Pagan religion known as Shinto, as well as Buddhists, began the persecution of Christians known as the Kirishtan Holocaust. The first victims were executed by crucifixion. The youngest martyr was just 12 years old. An estimated 1 million followers were killed over a period of 260 years which did not end until Japan was defeated by the Allies during World War II. The Christians of Japan like those of the Romans went underground because of persecution.

In what ways do you see Christianity as oppressive?

In contrast, I see Christianity as a discipline, a way of life. Could it be that permissive religious denominations lose their followers either because people are looking for a greater discipline (discipleship) or they conclude following no discipline at all works as well as following one with less or little discipline (discipleship).

Prolly because examples such as your paganism/Wicca don't need to proselytize.

A religion should be satisfying in itself. If you have to go sell it on other people it's a dead giveaway that you're not comfortable with it. Missionism is arrogance writ large, and arrogance is the antithesis of what religion's supposed to be.

The Bible is filled with teachings of not being arrogant and says why you should not be arrogant.

What Does the Bible Say About Arrogance

1 Samuel 2:3 ESV

Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

Romans 12:3 ESV
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

Proverbs 8:13 ESV
The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.

Isaiah 13:11 ESV
I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.

I didn't read this post before but now that I have --- that's just bizarre. And wrong on every level.
Where do you come up with an idea like that?

that's a pretty poor response. Did anyone vote for bush because he used to drink?

To answer your question, did you ever consider that most people understand something about real life and the destructiveness of bad behavior that you simply haven't learned yet?

Since when has religious doctrine prevented instinctual human behaviours? Does Mormon doctrine prevent child sexual abuse, or does it simply mandate forcing children into marriages with crusty older men who wanna have sex with little girls sans guilt? Putting a religious 'stamp of approval' on things doesn't make them ok any more than a government tax stamp on pack of cigarettes makes ciggies ok.

So does that mean you think most people can do well while they are drunk and on drugs?

"Do what thou wilt" applies to Thelema, and the complete phrase is "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the Law, Love under Will." Wiccans have something similar in the Wiccan rede, which goes something like "An' it harm none, do what ye will"... meaning, "do as what you Will, so long as it harms none". "Satanism" has no code, as there are many forms of Satanism, and many are radically different from each other.
