For 50+ years most Americans, both conservative and liberal have felt they and their country are headed in the wrong direction, this despite a decent standard of living, a reasonably clean environment, and above average life expectancy. Europeans, on the other hand are happier and more content than Americans, this despite a standard of living that is no better than in the USA.

But Why?

You labor under a false assumption. I'm American and I'm happy as a puppy with two peckers.

I live in Europe and I can tell you thus is true.

Those countries have a far better grasp of balance than we do. Too many of us are still convinced that money buys happiness, and that equilibrium between the individual and society is somehow a bad thing, a capitulation of some sort.

The bigger car is absolutely necessary. The bigger TV is absolutely necessary. I need to work more hours so that I feel better about myself. It's all about me and what I have. It's like drugs, trying to fill a hole that can't be filled.

That notion strikes me as a self esteem issue.

America has been on a moral and economic decline for a very long time.

In addition, Leftism has taken over government and it's institutions.

I often wonder if things will get so bad that they will look back on the Covid years as good years.

Here we go again.

Those "happiness" surveys are pure bullshit.

BAsically they all say that anyone who doesn't love what their government does is unhappy

I think some of the main things are hope and hope.

Hope you can see has a massive impact. It's an emotional feeling, and we're emotional beings. Obama's "Hope not hate", Trump's "Make America Great Again", all offered unachievable hope wrapped up in nice packaging and people jumped on it, hoping it'd change their miserable lives.

Take China, people are much poorer, GDP per capita is like 4 or 5 times lower, but Chinese people KNOW they'll be better off than their parents.

US citizens know they'll be worse off.

Politics in the US isn't aimed at the people, it's aimed at the rich, and people are voting for their own self destruction because if they can't get that promised hope, then the next best thing is to enjoy fucking it all up, setting it on fire, shooting it, getting angry and blaming anyone and everyone else, but themselves for their lack of hope.

It’s not difficult to understand why. A large percentage of Americans live in or near poverty. Many live pay check to check. They have few job protections like unions, so they can be fired at any moment. Millions have no healthcare insurance or inadequate insurance, thus exposed to bankruptcy at any moment. Living under this strain can make one unhappy.

Well you know them Dutch are pretty high up there on both happiness and the belief that their country is heading in the wrong direction too. Of course their entire educational philosophy is to have their kids aspire to be happily mediocre. Anyway, polling is what it is.
