The commander of the Confederate troops was above all a great soldier, venerated by his soldiers. But as leader of the armies of the slave states during the Civil War (1861-1865), it has now become a very cumbersome symbol

Lee was neither a fervent supporter of slavery, nor a quasi-abolitionist, as his thurifiers sometimes put it, citing a sentence from a letter to his wife: "Slavery" is "moral and political evil in Any country, "writes Lee in this letter of December 27, 1856 (before the Civil War). "The blacks," he continues, "are immeasurably better here than in Africa, morally, socially and physically, and the painful education they are undergoing is necessary for their education and their race. Their emancipation will result more quickly from the gentle and unifying influence of Christianity than from the storms and storms of violent controversy. "

Qui était le général Lee, le Sudiste devenu l'icône de l'extrême droite américaine ?

He's not an icon of the extreme right, he's an icon of the extreme racists who are still pissed off about losing their right to own slaves.

Those who dispute the destruction of the statue of General Lee do not contest slavery but the history of their country .

Here in France we have plenty of statue of Napoléon1 and He wanted to get the restoration of slavery but we do not demolish his statues for it is a matter of common sense, it is part of our history.
This story of the destruction of statues stinks the stupidly of leftists.

Sorry, i mean those who are not Okay with the destruction of the statue of General Lee.

The statue should stay, it's part of our history. People who want it to remain have different reasons for that. It represents different things to different people.

He was President Lincoln's top general. Lincoln wanted Lee to lead the charge for the Union but he declined as he could not take up arms against his people in Virgina

Exactly, and why now ? i get the feeling it as Something to do with those who are very upset that President Trump win the élection.
They should just get use to the fact that he is the President of the United States because the way they behave cause a lot of violence i blame them.

It IS about the election. They'll come up with everything they can think of to distract and delay until next year's election in the hopes that some of the slander against Trump will stick and they can win back one of the houses of Congress. Divide and conquer is their aim.

Take a ride through the Washington & Lee University campus parking lot in Lexington Virginia and you will find a diversity of license plates from every state and a diversity of students Doesn't that indicate that Robert E. Lee is a national icon? Why can't the crazy angry and bigoted left accept history and accept a diversity of opinion about history? Thank God we didn't elect Hilary.

If Hillary were elected, this whole made up Confederacy bull shit wouldn't be happening.

However had she won, she likely would have won a Nobel Peace prize by now and the MSM would be telling us how great she is.

Why can't the crazy, angry and bigoted right, accept that towns and universities have the right to decide whether who it is appropriate to honor on their property?
