A favorite challenge/throwdown by atheists is "Which God?", giggle, giggle.

I compiled the first answer I have ever seen. Please offer your suggestions
to add.

Just one God, the God of the Bible.

Of course, history is littered with other gods, pagan gods, that have long since died off.

Exceptions to the rule here is Hinduism and the continued pagan cults of such things as mother earth, etc..

That is about it.

A belief requires faith. Faith is those things that are not seen but are true and exist. So, does this mean Dawkins believed that evolution has no empirical proof? And, that everyone has to accept evolution or they are insane, wicked, stupid and need to be burned at the stake or put into an insane asylum? I think Dawkins was the insane and wicked stupid person.

More precisely, the question is, what is the nature of God?
  • Is He the God who says love your enemies or the God who commanded Joshua to slay every living thing in a capture city?
  • Is He the God of individuals or of nations?
  • Is He the God of love and mercy or the God that punishes the innocent for the crimes of the guilty?
  • Is He the God who asked for forgiveness for Jews because they knew not what they did or the God who said 'His blood be on us and on our children' in His scripture?
 
Cougarbear, I agree with your assessment of Richard Dawkins, but faith is something all scientists must have.

This country was not founded on Christianity or anything else. There was no restrictions placed on anyone. There were great lengths taken to keep god out of it.
The references do not include how the country should be run. They really only make it sound good for the believers.

In fact, God or the divine is mentioned at least once in each of the 50 state constitutions and nearly 200 times overall, according to a Pew Research Center analysis. - PewResearch.org

Since you quoting literature, read Dawkins the god delusion and Hitchens god is not great and poisons everything.

Think about this. If you have faith to the point you firmly believe there’s a god, you don’t need one. It’s not necessary.

Nine years ago, I discovered I didn't really need the person I believed to be my best friend. She passed away. I tell you this, not to change your mind about you lack of belief in God and your total belief God is not necessary, but to perhaps provide insight into people of faith. Technically, I cannot claim to be a person of faith, as I do know, absolutely, God is. We won't go into that, and there is no proof, anyway. People of faith understand the very same things I say by faith alone.

Let's start with my atheist husband. He points out that, technically, all atheists are agnostic because a negative cannot be proven. The reason he has never pursued faith is because at a young age he decided even if there is a God, he wants to go through this life without any help from God. He wants to do it on his own. He knows of my experiences, believes them, but adamantly does not want the same for himself. He joked that he wanted to go through this life without crutch. I grinned and responded, "No you are like the who decides to travel on foot. Meanwhile, I am like the person who hops on a bike or even a plane and will meet up with you. My husband and I are each content with our own mission, and content to encourage the other on theirs.

God is not a crutch. A better analogy is that a connection with Him is like a plant who is connected to additional water and fertilizer. I am a better plant with God.

With the death of my best friend, I not only lost her, but the part of myself I was when we were together. Since I cannot get my friend back, and I cannot truly get that part of me back, either. If I were to to walk away from God, I would be walking away from another part of me.

We can all live just fine if we were to lose a non-essential body part. But most would agree if we had that part, there are added benefits and abilities to what we can personally do or achieve, even if we can get along without it just fine. Encourage people in their faith, while continuing to relate your own journey.

you haven't lost your friend, you've lost your way ... their influence remains the same whether there or not. it's for you to reassure its authenticity.

Seriously, don't be silly. I am sure you mean well, but what is lost is not the influence of past events. What is lost is in the present...ongoing present events, enjoying her personality in the present, not solely through memories. Again, I am sure you mean well, but "influence" is not the same as being with.

What may help you with my own beliefs is that one day when I was feeling particularly blue (years after her passing), her oldest daughter (Grin: Out-of-the blue) texted me. She had felt compelled to read through a book of poetry her mother loved and had given to her. Her mom had made a note in one of the margins of a lovely sentiment about friendship. She noted, "This is what your Aunt Meriweather and I have and always will. I wish for a friend like this for you in your life, too."

Her daughter added, Just as I felt suddenly compelled to pick up and read through that book, I felt compelled to send what she wrote to you. So here it is."
