If we, and the Chinese, don’t learn from our own mistakes, we will likely be equally unprepared in the future, when far more serious threats are likely to emerge. All our armies and aircraft carriers and foreign military adventures — on which we spent and spend trillions — did not and will not defend us against viral epidemics or likely ecological threats in the future.

Naw, come on... nobody wants that, with all the taint, the contempt, and the nameless horrors associated with it. Be that as it may.

As to the governments' reaction to the coronavirus, it would appear they are all flawed, each in their own way, for reasons ranging from incompetence and callousness to lending a helping hand to price-gauging and other forms of profiteering - with the possible exception of South Korea, and their intrusions into privacy also warrant a closer look once that all is done. At the very least, governments were way late recognizing the danger and reacting to it. That's why hospitals are being swamped, supplies are running out, and profiteers are having a field day.

The other major issue is, right now, to get laid-off workers and (particularly) small businesses through the necessary shut-down, so that as close to all of them can resume where they left. Without that, a protracted Depression lies ahead.

When that is done, and since this thread is in "Europe", it's time for Europe to get their house in order, building resilient healthcare systems with adequate staffing and funding, and, not least, preventing what is going to be a horrendous cost to be billed to future generations. It should start out with taxing the profiteers' usurious profits back, and not end before "contributing their fair share" is achieved universally.
