2+5=7 7+5=12
3+6=9 9+12=21
8+11=19 19+21=40 :)

Except where did the 8 and the 11 come from?
What would be the next line in the sequence?
Really makes no sense to me.

The 96 solution makes more sense to me.
{...
1 + 1x4 = 5
2 + 2x5 = 12
3 + 3x6 = 21
4 + 4x7 = 32
5 + 5x8 = 45
6 + 6x9 = 60
7 + 7x10 = 77
8 + 8x11 = 96
...}
That is not just a one shot solution, but an entire sequence that keeps going.

The way I have it ,is the way the site presented the problem. Interesting how the problem is seen by each one of us. :)

There are often many solutions to the same problem. No surprise there.

Except that your solution:

{...
1+4=5
2+5=7 7+5=12
3+6=9 9+12=21
8+11=19 19+21=40
...}

Breaks the patterns.

Starting with:

1+4=5
2+5=7 7+5=12
3+6=9 9+12=21

The next lines in the sequence using your method, should be:

4+7=11 11+21=32
5+8=13 13+32=45
6+9=15 15+45=60
7+10=17 17+60=77
8+11=19 19+77=96

You not only have to use a formula to get the answer, but also have to have a formula to derive the next inputs into the answer, since they are generated by their processors.
The 8 and 11 can't just pop up out of nowhere.
