"Blue Dog" Democrats are the supposedly fiscally conservative Democrats, but fiscally conservative has come to mean somebody who only wants to spend slightly less than the more "progressive" members of Congress. A libertarian is somebody who wants to actually cut government spending, not cut the amount that we increase the spending by.

"Blue Dogs" tend to be middle-of-the-road on most issues. More than anything, they support the status quo.

"Libertarians", by definition, are radical, actively campaigning for the reduction of state power.


Thus, in the welfare-state of America, libertarians remain a fringe group, while blue-dogs retain power indefinitely.
