When after already serving his term as president of the United States he wrote this phrase to the then president, John Adams?

"the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with all this artificial scaffolding,"

I think, like the Bible, people either mistakenly interpret it, or purposely misquote it. I think maybe Thomas Jefferson's letters are that way.

He was thinking that one day someone who does not know how to spell Campbell would wonder what he was thinking.

He was TROLLING his sometimes friend, sometimes bitter political enemy, John Adams.

Yeah, I am NOT kidding.

Their long time political rivalry and correspondance is historic.

Here's a brief history of it

perhaps it would be helpful, in answering that question, if you examined the entire quote. cause i do not think he meant what you think he did.

The truth is that the greatest enemies to the doctrines of Jesus are those calling themselves the expositors of them, who have perverted them for the structure of a system of fancy absolutely incomprehensible, and without any foundation in his genuine words. And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with all this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this the most venerated reformer of human errors.

He was thinking " John this goddamn place is slap full of murkins" No A

No one has brought up the possibility that he was thinking about Sally Hemings?
