In 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated — okay, “celebrated” doesn’t capture the funereal tone of the event. The events (organized in part by then hippie and now convicted murderer Ira Einhorn) predicted death, destruction and disease unless we did exactly as progressives commanded.

Behold the coming apocalypse as predicted on and around Earth Day, 1970:

1."Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind." — Harvard biologist George Wald

2."We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation." — Washington University biologist Barry Commoner

3."Man must stop pollution and conserve his resources, not merely to enhance existence but to save the race from intolerable deterioration and possible extinction." — New York Times editorial

4."Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years." — Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich

5. "Most of the people who are going to die in the greatest cataclysm in the history of man have already been born… [By 1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s." — Paul Ehrlich

6. "It is already too late to avoid mass starvation," — Denis Hayes, Chief organizer for Earth Day

7. "Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions…. By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine." — North Texas State University professor Peter Gunter

8. "In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution… by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half." — Life magazine

9. "At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it's only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and none of our land will be usable." — Ecologist Kenneth Watt

10. "Air pollution...is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone." — Paul Ehrlich

11. "By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate… that there won't be any more crude oil. You'll drive up to the pump and say, ‘Fill 'er up, buddy,' and he'll say, ‘I am very sorry, there isn't any.'" — Ecologist Kenneth Watt

12. "[One] theory assumes that the earth's cloud cover will continue to thicken as more dust, fumes, and water vapor are belched into the atmosphere by industrial smokestacks and jet planes. Screened from the sun's heat, the planet will cool, the water vapor will fall and freeze, and a new Ice Age will be born." — Newsweek magazine

13. "The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age." — Kenneth Watt

They said it was GLOBAL COOLING BACK THEN!!!!!

Yes, the brilliance of people with too much education and zero common sense, now to include the agenda of crony capitalism making bank on the gullibility and flat out stupidity of the masses.

DC destroyed an entire industry of making incandescent light bulbs when nobody was looking. And the assassin was the chimp Bush.

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network,[1] and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.[2]
In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature's equipoise was later sanctioned in a Proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award in recognition of his work.[3] While this April 22 Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations.[4][5] Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.

One has to wonder at the mindset that thinks this world would be better off with less education.

What was indoctrination?

What was indoctrination?

Everything these liberal academic types said back then.

Education is the teaching of FACTS, and teaching how to process facts into new ideas.

Indoctrination is the teaching of students only certain information that can ONLY lead to a pre-set ideology.

Unfortunately that is what happens in much of academia (and public school) today.

What liberal academics are you talking about? This country has tens of thousands of "academics". Statements such as those you just made are meaninglessly vague and border on paranoia and bigotry.

FCT, you thanked him for his useful post. Do you actually agree with nonsensically generalized bias like that?

Of course.. he proved my point that everyon3 but u knows that the "education" message from Earth Day has always been indoctrination.. The dire predictions in the OP are marginal products of leftist angst.. The concept that cockroaches have a natural right to inhabit the planet and procreate, but human population is a curse... Yearning for the power to coerce compliance with their rules for living on the planet.. And making predictions calculated to "play on your fears" as Al Gore likes to say...

If you have any problem with that assessment ----- just pay more attention to what your board comrade say and how they it...Or just go read some 8f the authors noted in the OP.. Surprised you never read Paul Erlich.. youre a very bad leftist...

He "proved" your point? Ha.

I did read Paul Ehrlich. Back when he was on the bestseller list. So did a lot of people. But he turned out to be wrong. If we were as you like to characterize us, we'd still be listening to him. But even he realized he was wrong before much time had passed. He and Barry Commoner were alarmists. I suspect they both had the best of motives but eventually all they were doing was trying to sell books. I'm not familiar with Kenneth Watts, but the OP seems to be quoting him out of context from what I can see.

So, you've got two fellows who overstated their case. You think that PROVES that all liberal academics were indoctrinating.. who? The public? Their students? And with what? That we should all be concerned about the various threats to the planet's environment and ecologies? Do you ACTUALLY want to argue that back in the 1970s there were no objective reasons to be concerned about the environment? Do you?

The dumb one's mainly. Those and the political propagandists.

Do you have a list?

Were they all at one college? Even one university?

Were they all the professors of a single subject?

Is there some reason you can't see the idiocy of such charges?

Glad you don't listen to Ehrlich anymore, the global environment/ecology alarmist from the 70's. But you probably listened very carefully to the global environment/ecology alarmist of the 00's, right? You know, the guy (and his troupe) that led the push for carbon credits in the fight against global WARMING!

Liberal academic types ARE indoctrinating folks. They are indoctrinating students in their classroom. Conservative and middle-ground students are starting to fight back now by videotaping this obvious indoctrination on their phones and putting the crap on the internet. This is great, because parents can see exactly what they are spending their money on!

But the indoctrination is more insidious than that. Since it has been going on for 50 years, now pretty much all of our guv'ment school teachers have received that indoctrination....and are now indoctrinating the school kids in the abject liberalism. (Remember the grade school kids singing about "Obama, Obama, Obama" during the elections??).

And lastly, academic types indoctrinate the public through their very flawed research. They do "research" with a goal of proving their belief system, publish it in journals run by their political cohorts with no regard for the selection bias there, and then go on television to tell the public that the world is going to come to an end. Want examples? How's that global warming coming along....it's about 15 years overdue!

Virtually all of the climate k00k predictions never came to pass. And a lot of the hopelessly duped still buy their crocks of BS.

"Computer models", in terms of being used as predictors have been proven to be a joke.

Here is why YOU are a threat to your kids, and im not... Good that you recognize the alarmist nature of that propaganda and all the utterly failed predictions.. But a thorough analysis of the hype and indocrination surrounding earthday would show you that the REAL LASTING DAMAGE would be the premises and "science assertions" that PRODUCED all those utterly failed prognostications.. Those radical concepts survive the carnage. After all, for each failed prediction in an Erlicht book --- there was 2 chapters of assumptions and assertions that survive to this day... And millions of HS and College grads that were indoctrinated with those misconceptions... That failed view of environmentalism was POUNDED into little heads of mush by a willing army of teachers and public leaders.

See the wild fortune telling was just a marketing plan... The message and the mission survived like a latent virus waiting for one more mutation.. And voila....... there you are with your AGW circus come to town........ Using the same marketing plan, and pushing the same dishonored theories about mans place in the world......

I remember the first Earth Day back in the early 70's!! My father, who has the political IQ of a small soap dish, bought all this shit hook line and stinker.......like it was about all the people of the world coming together to save the environment. All these years later, you realize it was one of the opening salvo's from the progressive agenda: scare the shit out of the people so they could be taxed up the ying-yang years later towards the ultimate goal of total wealth redistribution. As the 80's turned into the 90's it was all amped up with the global warming crap.......another ruse created by the progressive assholes among us.

Your words just proved just how indoctrinated you are by the left, using the very words of paranoia, bigotry and bias.

Whenever rational and factual statements are made, the left have been indoctrinated to think that rational and moral thought is bigotry, biased, nonsense & generalized.
Those very words of thinking like that is what keeps the left from ever having any common sense or to be able to tell the difference between what is right or wrong.
You are not thinking at all, you have been indoctrinated and you don't even realize it.

Yeah.. But Sherry, the demise of a major American city is a celebration of JOY !! Just think of how many communal farms that land will support. How much can be set aside for public open space and organic produce marts.. The new opportunities to rebuild with their design criteria.

There's a series on (I think), the History/SCI channel called "Afterman" where they joyfully predict how nature devours and reclaims many of the major American cities after our demise.. Folks CHEERING for the gators taking back the FountainBleau Hotel on Miami Beach.. Elm trees growing thru the Boston Turnpike.. Betcha it gets these folks close to orgasm..

Those outside your cult see you as having descended into pure paranoid kooky goodness.

Frantic handwaving and meaningless anecdotes won't prove your case. Evidence and logic will. So try providing some. Or just keep on sputtering about how liberals are plotting to get you. I'm sure that will convince all the onlookers.
