What did our founders really mean when they said “general welfare”?

That they would provide and protect freedom and the opportunity to succeed.
Not that they would tell us to stay home and blow our noses.

If you voted for Trump there’s a good chance you’re a lot like me with regard to why....I voted for him on two policies almost exclusively...First and foremost on how he would deal with illegal Mexicans and the border and second on how he would yank lowlifes off the Democrat induced welfare plantation.
Anyhoo, as we approach the point where welfare reform will be visited I ask for your opinions on EXACTLY what you think our founders meant when they used the phrase “GENERAL WELFARE” in the constitution?

Attention all Smartest Guys In The Room, and legal scholars:
Please spare us the case citations such as the U.S. vs Butler case and the like. I’m interested in YOUR opinions.

Not what the left says it means.

Otherwise there would be no need for a constitution that is supposed to limit the government.

They just say (like the left does today) it falls under general welfare.

My ass.

They provide general welfare as a catch all for.....

Do what is best for the country.

No they don't.

Never have.

Even Social Security screws the poor.

Just how does SS "screw the poor" ...

LMAO

You really don't know ?

Seriously ?

I will explain it to you.

I just want to know if you really are that ignorant.

I love to her your libertarian stupid-splaining on how SS hurts the poor.

I said "screws the poor".

You get in proportion to what you put in. That's not security...it's a retirement plan.

I'll get a lot more in S.S. that the guy really needs it (worse than I will).

But I'll need it less.

Don't tell me you didn't know that.

They obviously made the Constitution flexible
The Bill of Rights were lines that were not to be crossed- only one "flexibility" in its entirety- the 4th amenment, "just cause"

The rest of the Constitution is rules for the rule writers to abide by- that they don't points out that rules are meant to be broken- lawyers and judges do it with regularity, which to me would suggest, in a monkey see monkey do world, the follower monkeys can break rules too- so, the narciccists sociopaths in the District of Criminals write *laws* to punish the evil doers whose behavior they disapprove of, which is, typically, anyone not in their circle of friends (big money donors and lobbyist)- for them there is "some flexibility"- everyone else, not so much.
When that happens - and it sure as hell does - We the People can make changes in the system, specifically those under which the thugs in DC operate. Term limits, for example. Getting money out of politics, for example.

So that's ultimately up to us. We're clearly failing currently, as much of our population is far more concerned with who the Kardashian girls are banging, or whether we've posted our latest meal on Facebook.

This is self-inflicted. We got fat and happy.
For decades there has been talk about term limits. Nada. Also about a balanced budget amendment. Nada. We will never have a balance budget amendment because we have a fiat currency and people vote for things. Career politicians and term limits?

It doesn't happen because we don't care enough. We keep dropping our standards. We keep refusing to hold these people accountable, ESPECIALLY those on "our side".

These thugs are going to continue to get away with this, because we don't care enough to change the system under which they operate. This is a self-inflicted wound.

Complacency is born of contentment manufactured with false pride in material acquisition for instant gratification- not to mention piss poor education, at home and in school, which renders a lot of stupid among the general population. Enough to outnumber the not stupid by a wide margin-

I love to her your libertarian stupid-splaining on how SS hurts the poor.

It hurts the poor by making them live below the poverty level. They pay into it all their lives, but the pensions they get are woefully inadequate.

Correct.

It's not security. It is a retirement program.

So the poor don't get much out of it and they need it the worst.

I'm a 32 y/o old leftie
What is your primary mental disorder?
Pole puffing ass banger, tranny, free shit begging socialist, drug addict?
I am a drug addict (pothead)
Why are you a “Leftie”?
What do you find attractive in leftism?
I believe welfare works...I believe Americans should get access to good Healthcare for free. I believe our government just plain ole' does not do the things it needs to be doing in the year 2021 (Maternity leave for moms, 10+ days a year paidv acation for workers, Healthcare for US Citizens, raising taxes, getting our crumbling infrastructure rebuilt)...

I think too many people call "being a good American" socialism. And I believe too many people think "Screw yours, I've got mine" is the same as being conservative...

oh, and I believe pot should be legal. Like I said, I'm a pothead.

I asked you if you were a "free shit begging socialist"...you didn't answer.....so you are?

"I believe welfare works"
Why would you believe that? $22 trillion has been spent on the "welfare" you speak of without any measurable improvement.
GENERAL WELFARE can work if implemented like our founders intended.

"I believe Americans should get access to good Healthcare for free."
Why should others pay for others healthcare?
What's wrong with I buy mine and you buy yours?

"I believe our government just plain ole' does not do the things it needs to be doing in the year 2021 (Maternity leave for moms, 10+ days a year paidv acation for workers, Healthcare for US Citizens, raising taxes, getting our crumbling infrastructure rebuilt)."
Why do you believe these are functions of government? Why should government be able to force me to pay for your children?
Why would you want you and your fellow citizens to pay higher taxes?

Why should others pay for others healthcare?

Already happens everytime someone goes to the ER without insurance.

What's wrong with I buy mine and you buy yours?

Because making profit from the sickness and ilnesses of you and me is immoral.

Why do you believe these are functions of government? Why should government be able to force me to pay for your children?

Because we decided in the early 1900's, around the time FDR came into office, that taking care of our children is the way to have a future for our country. Sorry...no more child labor, General Lee.

Why would you want you and your fellow citizens to pay higher taxes?

Because I like the things my tax dollars pay for, and I want more of it.

Why would you believe that? $22 trillion has been spent on the "welfare" you speak of without any measurable improvement.

Because $22 trillion on wars in Asia and South America the last 60 years hasn't done anything for me, and $22 trillion on stuff in my own borders would probably help me.

Why should others pay for others healthcare?

Show me where the constitution affirms such a claim?

Why would you want you and your fellow citizens to pay higher taxes?
Because I like the things my tax dollars pay for, and I want more of it.
So you give Father Government a dollar and he gives you more than a dollar back in services?

AFrench2 is the product that academia spits out the other side these days...it's sad, even a kid growing up in Texas surrounded by good, real, core Americans can't break the cycle. They honestly believe Father Government exists to spoon feed them.

Obviously they meant that men should be able to go to the bathroom in women's bathrooms and boys who dress up like girls should be able to compete against girls.

One thing we do know is that it should not mean that billion dollar corporations should be getting government subsidies while they move jobs out of the country.
