Nobody wanted this strike, and nobody knows how to end the battle.

That was the gist of the situation on Day 1 of the nurses strike against the University of Vermont Medical Center, which came after 22 sessions and more than three months of negotiation resulted in an impasse between management and the nurses.

Gabrielle Robinson, a longtime rehab nurse in Colchester who also works at the hospital's main campus, was walking the picket line with dozens of other nurses at the Fanny Allen Campus on a warm, sunny Thursday morning. The honking from passing cars was constant — a show of support — and was met with yells of gratitude from the nurses. But Robinson remained troubled.

"We do this with heavy hearts," she said. "I think right now all we have is solidarity. We have to stick together."

UVM Medical Center President Eileen Whalen was similarly circumspect at a news conference later in the day, held inside the hospital.

"This is a difficult moment for our organization, and I know many community members are concerned about how we will move forward," Whalen said.

Whalen talks to them like children. lol.

If you think this is bad, wait till the government has complete control over health care. Then salaries will be gutted even more with no place to run.

Then all hospitals will be like the VA in Arizona with secret death lists of patients not to treat cuz they are too sick and expensive to care for and with very little staff.
