Thousands of ballots unlikely to reach military voters in time

A group of Republican senators said Monday that thousands of voter ballots are unlikely to reach military service members until after Nov. 6.

One day ahead of the election, Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) sent a letter to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to express their concern over delays in ballots reaching military voters overseas.

“We write to express concerns over another serious failure by the Department of Defense (DoD) to safeguard the voting rights of our overseas military service members, which we believe could result in the imminent disenfranchisement of thousands,” the letter stated.

Mail redirection in the military can take between 14 to 50 days, meaning a ballot could reach the voter possibly more than a month after ballots have to be mailed back in order to be counted. The Military Postal Service Agency (MPSA) identified problems with the system after the 2010 election, but hasn’t implemented changes.

But God knows there are people out there that can make it to the grocery store to swipe their EBT cards, yet somehow they are incapable of making it to a polling station.

If you're in a Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan with no internet service it's hard to find a polling station........

This is awful.

Isn't that the brass' fault? They should have come up with a plan to modernize the military post office long ago.

Of course the Hussein is going to do everything he can to stop the military vote, they would vote him out in droves if it were all up to them.

The White House appointed somebody to take care of this. They were warned not to let it happened and now it's too late to do anything about it.

And I'm sure they planned it that way.

Last week a plane carrying ballots crashed in Afghanistan.

Oops!!!!!

Yes they should have. And the operative words being 'a long time ago'. This has always been a problem. Not some new conspiracy to suppress voting like the OP is spinning it to be.

If my memory serves me right, they had a problem in '00 with ballots being returned on time. After eight years of a Republican president who supposedly benefited from those votes, how can it be Obama's fault? Sounds like the top echelon's getting their mail and aren't worried about the ranks.

"Grocery" store? What's a "grocery" store?

Have you ever been to a poor neighborhood? Not too many "grocery" stores. Mostly dollar stores and "convenience" stores.

You know... Where you swipe that card and get your free stuff that people who work cannot afford. Funny how everyone bitches about the poor not being able to get to polling places as the reason those poor voters are disenfranchised, but when the troops get disenfranchised... Not a problem.

Sorry, but isn't it the responsibility of the state to send the ballots out early enough to get to the overseas voter?
