The United States will not relinquish its military base at Guantanamo Bay, or lift other embargoes aimed at Havana at this time, the White House said, despite requests from Cuban President Raúl Castro.
During a scheduled briefing on Thursday, the White House press secretary said that US President Barack Obama will not be heeding the requests recently made by his Cuban counterpart in the wake of a resetting of relations between the two nations.
On Wednesday, Castro said the US should officially end the economic embargo that’s been long imposed, and forfeit the detention center it maintains at Guantanamo Bay. The requests followed news that both nations have decided to re-open diplomatic avenues.
Weighing in on Castro’s request, White House press secretary Josh Earnest suggested on Thursday that the Cuban leader shouldn’t hold his breath.
We won't return it. We won't even close it. This prison will remain a scarecrow for the rest of world. It is a part of American political influence. How dare Castro ask such a present?!

The hell we won't. Have you forgotten who is running this country? Obama didn't bother to ask America's opinion as to whether we wanted to have a relationship with a terrorist regime. There is no normalized relationship to return to. As long as the Castro regime remains in tact, we don't support their ruthlessness. Period. That is our ideology. What about that stand makes it inevitable that we do business with such a brutal government? South America's inability to continue to bankroll Cuba, is what prompted this. Now our money will back them. Taxed American paychecks will support/be redistributed to them.

Obama met in secret and to keep America from finding out, met in Canada to finalize the deal, and then said to us, "It is inevitable, it's just a matter of time before we normalize relations with Cuba..." It was already a done deal!

One man decided that. America had nothing to do with it. That's because America wouldn't have agreed to it if those who escaped Cuba had a voice and an opportunity to lend to our understanding.
We think in terms of beaches and cigars, yippee! Cuban's would have told us of brutality that continues to exist. Now we get to shovel money to the Castros while they cozy up to Putin.

If Obama wants Gitmo gone. Gitmo's going. He won't ask for our blessing. It will be tacked onto some bill and reported on fri. evening , so that Monday the media will have moved on to, What's Palin up to now... And the Democrats will stand by their man and we'll hug a tree, and eat more broccoli, and # let the girls go free.

I'm still curious about why we are so keen on keeping Gitmo.

It's like keeping your prom date's panties long after she's forgotten about you and you haven't seen your dick for years under your beer belly.

Is it still necessary to remind Cubans that we "won" the Spanish-American war?

Don't be so sure. I bet Obama would give Texas back to the Mexicans if it would get a democrat candidate a couple of votes.

We are keeping the base as collateral on the $1.8 billion in american property (worth around 7-8 Billion today) those commie assholes stole (nationalized) when they took over.

You mean the stuff we stole from them to start with? Those dirty commie bastards beating big corporations at their own game.

so let me get this straight. We are spending BILLIONS fortifying Gitmo to teach them Cubans a lesson about not taking your stuff back.

Conservative Logic at it's finest. Let's do something totally stupid to rationalize our mean-spiritedness.

Gitmo should stay as it is, be turned over to Cubans, and renamed Tortureland that all American visitors are required to tour when they land. That is where they should have to enter on their way to the nightclubs and beaches.

Ooooooooooo, I bet Cuba is scared shitless. What the hell did they expect? we have a bunch of idiots running our country. they would be laughable if they weren't so dangerous to us, our safety and our country.

I see no strategic reason to keep Guantanamo?

It costs the American taxpayer billions of dollars every year to maintain a military presence.

Basically it's just a Cold War relic that needs to be shut down and the lease returned to Cuba. ....

.

If we go by Obama saying about 40 times if you like your Doctor you can keep your Doctor....
Gitmo will be handed over to Cuba...
No doubt about it.

You can almost be on it. he'll sell us out in a heartbeat

I'm surprised.

Figured Our Kenyan Emperor would want to give Gitmo back to Cuba so the brothers Castro would get on with clearing it to build him a retirement villa when he goes into exile.

Time's getting short.....

But maybe He has His royal eyes on some other site?
