Republicans block Senate disaster aid bill - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans blocked an effort Monday by Senate Democrats to quickly pass a $7 billion aid package for victims of recent natural disasters like Hurricane Irene, tornadoes in the Midwest and the South and floods along the Mississippi, Missouri and other rivers.
On a 53-33 vote, the Senate rejected an attempt by Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to bring up a bill that Democrats had hoped to use to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency's depleted disaster fund. Democrats needed 60 votes to advance the measure.
Reid said FEMA has spent almost $400 million in the past two weeks on emergency help like food and shelter following Irene and has only about $300 million left.
President Barack Obama on Friday asked Congress for $500 million to make sure the disaster fund doesn't run out of cash before the end of the month. He also officially asked for $4.6 billion for the upcoming budget year that starts Oct. 1.
Earlier Monday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Republicans will attach a disaster aid package to must-pass legislation for keeping the government fully running past Sept. 30. That stopgap spending bill is likely to advance next week.
"They're playing around the edges of what really needs to be done," Reid complained, saying hundreds of millions of dollars is needed to rebuild places like Joplin, Mo., where a tornado in May destroyed more than 7,000 homes and 10 school buildings and killed 159 people.

.................................................................................................

President asks for $500 million.....also asks for $4.6 billion for next year....(so far it is reasonable and acceptable).......Monday Senate Democrats asks for $7 billion to quickly pass an aid package (from this year, not next year).....Reid complains that "They're (Republicans) playing around the edges of what really needs to be done,"

Once more the Democrats want 165% more than next years budget request now and will certainly not turn down next years $4.6 billion budget allotment when it comes around, totaling $11.6 Billion allotment instead of the $4.6 billion.

Message to Democrats The US purse is empty! "We have no money! We need to be prudent, not spendthrift with the budget.

How does that quotation go? Never let a crisis go to waste.

It is possible that there are some few Democrats in the Senate who have come to grips with our financial situation. Let us hope so!

It seems, though, that Reid, and others like him (it would take more than one Senator to make the proposal) is like the person who thinks that as long as there are still checks in the checkbook it is OK to write them, no matter what the bank balance says.

So now Federal Emergency Managment is pork, too?

Interesting POV, boys.

Spending billions in Afghanistan is jake, but spending money rebuilding America after natural disasters is a bad idea?

Seriously, you people are nuts.

In both of those cases, how much of that money was or is to be allocated for reploacement homes?

On one hand the economy will not recover until the demand for housing is revived. Then when the demand for housing comes around through disaster the government wants to intervene and give money to the people for a house now.

The money for those houses paid for by government relief efforts did not come from a stimulated economy, through the need for housing, it came from taxes paid by other citizens through govenment checks (socialism).

In many cases, if left to their own means, the general public will find a way to recover from disaster, on thier own, without government intervention.

The government, it seems, is trying to edge out the need for NGO's role in assisting the masses.

STFU...

Tell that to all those people displaced... i fucking dare you.. go up there and tell everyone they're fucked because "it's socialism" to give government aid to our own people when disaster strikes.

I did not say that they should be left out in the cold. I said that they had alternatives other than government intervention.

People should take government aid to sustain themselves when needed but should not rely on it completely when there are other alternatives such as the compassion of other citizens ready and able to offer aid. If the demand is completely to the government, it paves the pathway to socialism. If people thought more independently of how to solve problems without government aid it would stimulate demand and therefore provide the ability of their fellow citizens to offer the supply.

It was done before government aid was available (in past decades) and it can be done now. It does involve some personal endurance and forethought by the individual to get things done on their own or with the aid of other citizens and NGO (non-profit) effort, but it is well worth the effort considering where the last 60-70 years of escalating government aid programs have gotten us.

The idea of entitelment to a standard of living previously experienced, to be provided by the government, no matter what the cause, is an attidute that was created by those with socialistic goals in order to create validity for government intervention into the private lives of people willing to allow loss of freedoms, or not willing to persue those freedoms, in trade for government handouts.

I have been telling people here, where I live, that if they are able to provide for themsilves and don't, it is a disservice to themselves and to others to constantly seek government aid. It is not well recieved because it has become an acceptable way of life for many due to the ever encroaching attitude of government entitlement.

Nice macho speech but it has jackshit to do with FEMA.

Ok, same idea, different application. I lived in Baldwin County, Alabama (east side of Mobile Bay) after Fredrick and Camielle caused major damage. This includes Gulf Shores, Alabama; a turist town on the Gulf Coast. I saw many home and business owners repair their houses and businesses on their own and with the help of thier fellow citizens without demand to the federal government and they came out of it quite alright. Not everyone did this without government aid but there was a noticeable amount of people who did not want to attach themselves to the percieved stigma of promoting government intervention into the area for what they considered to be a personal problem.

At the time, Hurricane Cammile 1969, and Fredrick 1979, many Americans still had the general idea that private enterprise trumped government intervention and did what they could to make private enterprise work. Today all we hear about is what a tragedy it is that the federal govenment cannot meet all the needs of those poor people being subject to adversity.

Oh, those terrible Republicans. Barry boy asks for $5.1B, the Dimocrats in turn try to instead hustle through a bill for $7B, and the Republicans stopped them. What a shocking and appalling display of fiscal responsibility. How in the hell are we ever going to go completely broke with them pulling crap like this?

It just struck me that maybe the fear of Democrats and others who promote reliance, of the disadvantaged, on government may be afraid that if the money does not continue to flow to those 'disadvantaged'; those 'disadvantaged' may find a way to provide for themselves and, being self sufficent, no longer need their government 'Big Daddies'. Wouldn't that be a shame.

No, both are bad ideas. Can you point to where FEMA is authorized in the Constitution?

Much like when you have an emergency at your own home.... you cut out in other unnecessary areas to pay for it... where you would give up cable TV, putting money in the Jerry Lewis can at the cash register, 2 starbucks coffees a day, etc.... the govt should be giving up art projects, handouts to the lazy, and other frivolous spending to make up for the extra needed for the emergency

As long as the money isn't out of the politicians personal pocket and is from the money tree that is planted on Capital Hill, they don't care. It just means they can spend more and more.
